[OzBargain 13th Birthday] Sydney CBD Women Preferred Meetup Thu 21/11 6:00 PM @ The Butcher's Block Barangaroo

Hi all!

Every time I go to an OzBargain event, I realise that I'm always one of the few 2 or 3 girls that show up. This time for OzBargain's 13th Birthday, I wanted to do something different. All the WOMEN in the house, raise your hands! Let's have a great party in Barangaroo to discuss money, makeup and men over a glass of wine or juice!

For the venue, I'm thinking of either $10 steak and salad from Cargo Bar (see here https://cargobar.com.au/special/steak-thursdays/) or $30 taco plates from Untied (https://untiedsydney.com.au/weekly-specials/taco-party/). I want to keep it fun and cheap in case we need to pay for the food ourselves. OzBargain will foot the bill if we have more than 15 participants so please bring your friends and family! We'll also have a laptop at the venue to sign new people onto OzB :) Let's get the party started!

Please vote if you are interested to attend this party so that I can make arrangements.

Date: Thursday, 21 Nov 2019
Time: 6-8 PM
Venue: The Butcher's Block (Tower One, 100 Barangaroo Avenue, Barangaroo)
Open to OzB members. Females preferred.
RSVP: Mandatory by Nov 15.
Cost: About $10 per person or free if we can get 15 people to attend!

Will you be discussing who has the biggest bargains?

    • +1

I thought the guys do that

  • +16

A guys only meetup would be discussing the Nintendo Switch and Lego, not women.

    • +3

      Speak for yourself.

[Ouch. That was a whack across the head from the misuses.]

  • +1

    This sounds interesting :)

  • Hmm… if Scotty doesn't attend (who's a bloke), then who's going to pay if you get the required numbers? Maybe rope in a female member of staff or work something else out with the boss.

    • +1

Scotty can reimburse later via transfer. Or maybe the Meetup is for women only (*plus Scotty). Hehehe…

    • +13

I didn't manage to go to any of the events outside Sydney either and none of the other organisers have any problem getting me to pay up…

      • none of the other organisers have any problem getting me to pay up…

        Hahahahaha that's the Bargain heart

    • +2

Would it be bigoted to refuse them entry to female-only events? Or bigoted to allow them access to female-only events? Genuine question.

      • Both. Good luck.

  • +12

There's more than 15 women on Ozbargain?!

  • +4

For free tacos, I'd identify as a woman. I'd identify me as a woman hard…

    • Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.

      No lotion talk, you hear?

  • +10

    Pretty sexist, but whatever.
It's 2019 (and almost 2020)! You should know better by now.

    • +4

For future reference, insert [current year] so your comment will never be outdated. An example as follows:

Why are you such a bigot about [current issue]? It's [current year]!

      Source: John Oliver.

    • -1

Are hens and bucks parties sexist too?

  • +2

The outcries of misogyny, gender inequality, sexism and being a straight-up pig would've been absolutely deafening if this was written by a male for a male-only event.

It's surprising how some genders are clearly more equal than others.

And it's a disgrace that OzBargain is promoting this blatant form of discrimination in our community by leaving this hateful and divisive post up.

    What a shame.

    • +6

Nothing stopping you organising your own event.

      • I support all members of our community equally. I don't consider myself a mysogynistic pig nor do I feel threatened or uncomfortable in the presence of those who are simply biologically different to me or identify as such, and have done nothing else wrong.

Nor am I going to stoop as low as totally excluding those of an entire gender from any community gathering. This sort of behaviour is simply hate speech.

I'll let the usual organisers do their thing.

        • +1

"Hate speech is a statement intended to demean and brutalize another, or the use of cruel and derogatory language on the basis of real or alleged membership in a social group." - Wikipedia

I don't see any of that in the original post. There are all sorts of gatherings based on all sort of cultural and societal factors. Maybe you can just let them have their gathering how they wish and you can have your gathering how you wish.

Maybe your discomfort here is more a reflection on you. There is nothing to feel threatened about here.

          • @keepingitril: The definition of "hate speech" as put forward by Oxford (arguably a more accurate source than Wikipedia):

abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation.

            Literally, the first result from:

            https://www.google.com/search?q=hate+speech

            I rest my case.

      • Would ozbargain pay for it though?

    • +2

This is the sad truth, haha.

    • +1

Normally I'd agree with you just to nip any discrimination (and this is the worst type, the kind against me) in the bud, but in this case it's hardly worth fussing about. Getting any people to come along to these things is hard enough. There's not going to be any sort of risk of it becoming the norm here, and because its privately funded (aka from the Scotsman pocket), the moneystrings will be cut if it gets ever too big.

Hardly a hill worth dying on.

If female sports are of any indication, female-only OzBargain events will eventually be invaded by M-to-F trans women anyway (invited by women themselves) so the problem will solve itself anyway (sort of).

  • +1

Could there pretty please be some vegetarian options ? I would like to attend

    • +1

Both these venues have veg options available.

  • Now all we need is a Sydney CBD Men only event :D

  • +14

Wow what a beat up! I personally have no problem with same sex only events… be they male or female. It’s just a different vibe. Mixed sex great as well! After all we still have gender specific toilets. I think Mia03 should be applauded for her initiative.

  • +31

I too am surprised about the beat up (or maybe not that surprised). As a father of 2 girls I'll think more than twice before allowing them to go to an IRL meetup of an online community. As part of OzBargain moderation team, I probably won't even let my girls come to some of the meetups knowing certain characters might turn up.

Having a meetup event is supposed to get like-minded OzBargainers together so they can sit down, eat & chat comfortably to celebrate another year of ozbargaining. Meeting people face to face can be daunting for some (myself included), and I think it's okay for the organiser to be picky on whom he/she wants to invite.

@Mia03 — please PM me once it's confirmed & I'll send you info on sponsorship.

@those who want a Sydney CBD Men only event — feel free to run one.

      It's jv isn't it? :D

I too am surprised about the beat up

I doubt anyone genuinely cares. More of taking a swing at the left's stance on discrimination. No matter how someone's tries to dress it up, it's technically discrimination, but most people are fine with it. We're aware that there are differences between the two genders.

  • Is there any event organised in Melbourne? What if you don't officially have an ozb account, are you still welcome to attend?

    • +1

Neil is trying to organize one in Melbourne. Location TBA.

    • -5

Make sure you're of the right gender before you get too hopeful.

  • +1

Interested! Love me some free tacos, hopefully enough people sign up in time lol

    • Please share with your friends and family!

  • +1

I want to attend but I feel like I need to be close friends with all of you first so it doesn't get awkward :D

    • Please attend! We'll all get to know each other : )

      • I've booked it in my calendar! When will the venue be confirmed?

    • my exact thoughts :P

  • +1

Keen to try it out :)

  • It's a maybe …. barangaroo is a little far… will you be confirming final numbers?

    • +1

Oh no…we'll get the final numbers on the 16th. Please come :)

  • +1

Very close to my work… if I can convince a friend then I will come along :)

    • That would be awesome! :)

      • +1

count me and my friend in :)

  • +1

Ah, department stores' big shopping night that night! Won't be able to go any more :(

    • +1

Sorry to hear that- maybe next year! Someone else just messaged me to see if we have any more space left so I'll let her know :)

  • +2

I have made a booking from 5 PM onwards but I'm unable to change the time on the original post. Please be on time - the earlier the better.

    • +1

What do you mean you are unable to change the time in the post? Do you mean OzBargain server won't let you change it, or do you mean you don't want to confuse people because it has been advertised for 6PM start for the past fortnight?

      • OzB server won't allow me to change it. As explained below, I had made the booking for 6 PM but they contacted me earlier today to see if I can move it to 5 PM. I agreed, but then I got another call just now asking informing me that the booking will be cancelled as they have a private function and will have the venue closed from 4 PM.

    • Post amended to 5.00 PM start time.

    • I've just received a call from the Untied saying that they are unable to go ahead with the booking due to a private function. They first requested a change to 5 PM for 6 PM and now they have cancelled the booking :(

      Please update venue to:

      The Butcher's Block
Tower One - 100 Barangaroo Avenue
      Barangaroo, NSW 2000
Time: 6 Pm to 8 PM (Original time)

      Thank you.

      • +2

Wow, so unprofessional. Lucky that you are able to find an alternate venue.

      • Is there some way you could let everyone who rsvp'd know its at The Butcher's Block? I didn't know of the venue change until I just checked now. A bit worried that people are gonna get confused :/

      • With the smoke today, it's probably a blessing that you're not at Untied.

  • +1

Yikes 5 PM! My work is about 5-7 mins away so I'll most likely be on time. Who do we find once we get there?

Edit: I see the venue has changed to The Butcher's Block at 6 PM - works for me!

  • I didn't get a chance to click going. Would I be able to come tomorrow night?

    • Come on in! 1 person has cancelled so you're more than welcome to join us :)

      • Awesome! See you guys there :) Could I bring a friend? She's a big bargain hunter too HAHA

      • Hi Mia, sorry but my friend just pulled out =/.

I might just pop by if I finish work on time =)

        • Ahh sorry to hear that! I'll bring my friend along so we can still make the numbers!

  • +11

Just a reminder about our event later today. Please look for the table with the big O Z B balloons and post here if you are unable to find venue/table.

    The Butcher's Block
Tower One - 100 Barangaroo Avenue
    Barangaroo, NSW 2000
    Time: 6 PM

    • +1

Unfort I can't make it but I hope it goes well. Cheers.

  • +10

Thanks to everyone for coming! We sure had a great time :)

Here are some photos from the event: https://www.instagram.com/p/B5H1oprFwJ4/

    • It looks like the guy on the left was dragged there and really not feeling it!

      • +4

I can confirm that I had a wonderful time, that particular photo just doesn't reflect it!

    • +1

Thanks @Mia03 for organising! And for the decors and candy bags

Thanks @scotty for the budget and shirts!

  • +1

Thanks so much @mia03 and @scotty for a fun evening :)

Gee just came across this thread due to the ozbargain Meetup.

The comments are way over the top lmao. Just think about it. You're a female and you rock up to a function and there's 50 guys you don't know

It's hard enough to get 50 male strangers to communicate with each other. Let alone a female. Imagine if it's your daughter and she's 18.

The more welcoming and easier we can make it for people the better and then they will have a good experience and can come to more events knowing they know 1 other girl or have a friend

When you go to comment sometimes or criticise just imagine it's your mum or sister or daughter you're looking out for..

Been a member of Ozb for about 14 years and I was definitely shy attending one event..I think I attended just one and think I just mumbled hi and walked past haha..maybe I ate a slice I'm not sure. Overall it's not easy meeting a bunch of strangers so please don't see it as a personal attack against men. It's just about making it a little less intimidating for the girls.

If you feel left out you can hang out with me and I'll buy you a pizza slice..
