SIM for Travelling through Europe

Hi, travelling through Europe

Starting in London, then onto EU countries. Was wondering what the best move for a travel sim is, ideally one for the whole continent

Would like to have one already delivered to me in Aus so I can land and its already setup

Looking mainly for data with some calls. 1 month travel time

Thanks!

I used a Three SIM card that I bought when I landed in London. The store was near my hotel and I arrived during business hours so got it right after I checked in.

It was 12gb for £20 and worked in every country I went to in Europe. (Higher data exists but only up to 15gb worked in Europe, the remainder had to be used in uk.)

It had no calls to Aus, but I just used data calls or wifi for that.

    • I'm looking at doing this in a month, is there any issues buying as a foreigner or is it all straight forward?

Very straightforward, you just walk in and tell them what you want. Or ask them, they were helpful.

They confirmed that I couldn’t use anything more than 15gb in Europe (I was in UK for 3 days and the rest of Europe for 24ish) so didn’t try to sell me a higher data one because they knew it would be useless for me.

Once activated this worked for 30 days I believe. (Double check though, it may have been 28?)

The only issue I had was there was no way to recharge that particular sim (as I didn’t have a local bank account). I was with a friend who travelled longer and she had to get a second sim half way through her trip in whatever country she was in at the time so she could still have access to a phone. That also was a relatively simple task though so it wasn’t the end of the world.

  • Old info, but in 2017 when I was in the UK, Norway, Croatia and Slovenia, I used Vodaphone. It had good coverage for quite remote parts of Scotland and in Europe. I picked up a SIM from a supermarket, for 99p, and purchased a 10 pound recharge voucher as well. Easy set up. Good coverage for our travels. As we were away for about 8 weeks, I also recharged. Left over credit was available for use once back home.

We went with this one and it worked in Belgium, Netherlands, Paris, Spain and Portugal.

    • Just got back from a month in Italy. Wife and I each had one of these. Very simple to set up. Just insert sim on arrival and you're good to go. Worked fine for most of Italy but had to manually select network a couple of times which immediately fixed the issue. As a bonus they worked in Hong Kong on the way home. Used Whatsapp to make calls back to Australia as there was plenty of data available.

  • Giffgaff.
They'll the Sim out to you for free.
Goody bags which includes up to 20gb roaming.
Runs on the o2 network whilst in the UK

Works basically everywhere in the EU

    Cheaper than 3 as well.

https://simsdirect.com.au/ is you want one ready as soon as you land.

  • Sims Direct — has been all good for me in Europe, and also Asia ….These are local supply sims, but do not fire up until close to departure.

  • Not sure of the benefit of ordering and waiting for it to be delivered, as they are available everywhere and will take only a couple of minutes to purchase.

OP doesn't state when travelling, but there are the unknown impacts of BREXIT to perhaps consider (if the same SIM can be used in both the UK and Europe).

    • There was a post in one of the other threads/deals on this topic which linked to 3 UK post confirming that Brexit will have no effect on their plans.

      • Yep, but Brexit is a mess and I can see the following (for the UK government site: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mobile-roaming-after-eu-exit

If there’s no Brexit deal - Surcharge-free roaming when you travel to the EU and EEA countries can no longer be guaranteed, if there’s no Brexit deal. This would include employees of UK companies travelling in the EU for business. Some mobile operators (Three, EE, O2 and Vodafone) have no plans to change their mobile roaming policies after the UK leaves the EU.

  • Are there any options for unlimited data? I'm a massive data consumer. Or at least 30gb? I'll be landing in Rome first, then France, UK.

I don't know but there is plenty of wi-fi available in Europe, much more so than in Australia..

      • +1 on that. The 12g was fine for us because most of the other data time was spent using the wifi at the rental place But I could see a use to watch Streaming shows whilst waiting in queues. You can download some streaming shows and use offline, that is what we do when flying on cheap airlines,
