Cheapest Wireless Internet? (USB/Wifi/Tablet/Tether etc)

Hi,

Im a uni student that just moved closer to my uni, in a boarding/sharehouse arrangement, but unfortunately without internet. I have the optus tablet which can be tethered for internet, but Im wondering what other options I have.
(Shame i'm out of the uni's wireless range =/ )

Any Ideas?

Cheers.

  • optus 2$ per day prepaid. would be good option if you share internet with housemates.

    • from memory, tethering isnt allowed on that plan?

  • Recently Aust Post had a $50 3 month ? (few gig) deal with a telstra wifi modem included which was a steal considering the speed of the Telstra connections.
    Otherwise go here… http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/18

  • Got a friendly neighbor you can split the bill with for their internet?
Usually you can jump up a plan level and it still works out significantly cheaper for them and you!

    • I was thinking this too, but I dont really know any of the neighbours, accomodation near uni is full of apartments and sharehouses. just randomly knock on a few doors and see if anyones interested?

  • Otherwise the other option is to spend more time at uni to use their internet. It's not so bad if you live close to uni anyway and it's open all hours of the day. 3G internet is pretty expensive in the scheme of things.

  • Have actually been trying to find cheap wireless internet too and came up with Dodo which offer pretty good deals when you either go prepaid 10GB = $99 (lasts 180 days) or 15GB = $139 (lasts 365 days) or if you want a plan they have 2GB for $20 a month, which didnt sound too bad. Anyway the options are endless as Ive just found out through a bit of Googling. I guess another option if you want free internet is you could sit out front of McDonalds in the carpark and use their free wireless, Ive heard of people doing that but havent actually been that desperate myself yet, but interesting idea though… or just use the free internet up at uni which is probably the more civilized approach and slightly more comfortable I imagine :)

  • Maybe try live connected ? if you just want Social Networking and emails and stuff it might just cut it ?

they have a plan with 1.5 gig for $15 and 3gig for $30 but if you go over, it gets nasty. I'm thinking about changing over to them

  • Alternatively, I can upgrade my 29 Optus cap to 49, getting $400 more credit (which isnt that much since I'm being charged 1.40ish a minute even if the call is a few seconds) and 1.5GB total data, which currently is at 200mb.

  • Get a month to month Contract with Virgin or Vodafone. It's like pre paid but need a credit check. On prepaid for example with vodaphone is 29 dollars for 2gb and 49gb for 2gb. Post paid is 39 for 10 gb. That way you can cut it off. Telstra has a 7gb plan 39.95 a month for 24 months but when your 7gb is up you get shaped to 64kbps which is like dialup. I find currently with the 2gb i chew through it like no tomorrow until I can get post paid. Additionally youtube and downloading lectures isn't ideal and is expensive.
    Other postpaiid
    $39ish for optus for 8gb
39ish for virgin on optus network for 10gb
Virgin has better coverage than Vodafone

    Hope that helps.

  • This is for gmail92 above, youve said youre paying $1.40 min on Optus, well I actually just cottoned onto a good rate with Crazy Johns prepaid and they have calls for 10c min. I couldnt believe it when I saw it cos its so cheap, but if you want to get your calls a little cheaper that could be a way to go.
