Difference between Citibank Plus & HSBC Everyday Global Accounts for travel in Europe

Hi everyone,
i am planning a trip overseas and was wondering what is the difference between the two cards? I noticed that the HSBC everyday global has multiple currencies whereas the Citibank is just one account.

What is the better one for Europe?

Citibank plus is better since they use the mastercard rate whereas HSBC uses their own rate. When I tested and converted some AUD to HKD, HSBC pocketed like 2%.

    • So you recommend just deposit my own money into citibank and just withdraw from the ATM's overseas?

      • That's what I would do as the main way. Always good idea to have backups though (eg. ING, UBank Ultra, HSBC).

        • Good point. Thanks mate!

          • @Westpac: Actually I can think of 1 use case for the HSBC one. IF you wanna lock in the exchange rate now then you can convert to Euro now but that's the only upside.

            • @fishball: Is that simply as depositing money into the account and then transferring into one of the other currency accounts?

              • @Westpac: Yeh it's been a while since I've done it though but it wasn't hard

    • Is Citibank Plus better than ING Direct?

    Have you considered ING?

ING have the same zero-fee as Citibank Plus (Visa vs MasterCard rates which vary slightly), but they also offer global fee-free ATMs, whereas Citibank only offer their own network ATMs.

If you're in some dodgy pub in Europe that charges €5 per withdrawal, ING with rebate the €5 and charge no fees.

Only catch is, with ING you need to use it 5 times and deposit $1,000 per month (the month BEFORE)

I carry both ING and Citibank Plus when I travel.

As always - be sure to select "Local Currency (EUR)" NOT "Home Currency (AUD)" if you are ever presented the option. The "Home" rate will be much higher than selecting "Local".

    • really? I always thought Citibank offers global fee-free ATMs too! crap :(

Only at specific ATMs. ING refunds fees for all of em if you can put up with the using it 5 times and depositing 1k they are far better.

Sounds like I need to get myself ING!
