DJI Mavic Mini or Xiaomi Fimi XE S8

For a long time I was looking at buying Xiaomi Fimi xe s8. However, now with mavic mini, mini appears to be more appealing. I am new to drone and this will be for hobby. Newer flown a drone before, I don't want to get a very cheap one and repent my purchase.

Any other suggestion is welcome. Decent quality photo/video, beginner friendly and price not more than $800 is my criteria

Mavic Mini all the way, DJI are excellent, well built, intuitive and well supported globally. If you decide to pursue drone-ing and want to take the next step there are plenty of upgrade paths and there will be familiarity with DJI.

    • Okay, would you consider spark against mini?

Yes, worth considering given it'll be on clearance to make way for the mini; however, the smaller form factor when packed up, increased flight times and better camera with the mini are also worth considering.

  • Mavic mini imo, im a big xiaomi fan but i would go for DJI for this purchase. The mavic mini is also under 250g mean you dont need to register and can fly in more places without restrictions DYOR

  • hrm, go for the drone made by a company known for making anything and everything, or go for the drone made by a company famous for their drones and video equipment? Pretty easy choice that one.

Although you don't want to start with a cheap one and regret, that is what got me into drones. I started with a $60 one from gerabest and had a blast with it. Then moved up to a hubsan X4501A and loved it even more with GPS, better camera and now smart functions. Then onto the Mavic Pro which I have now. DJI certainly has the best experience but I wanted to start a lot cheaper than $800 with my 1st drone

    • Good point, i did get a $40 from gearbest a year ago… I had hard time controlling that one.

  • I also would not leave out the Spark if you are new to quads. I would imagine that there would be some discounting going on to the Spark line as the new Mini is released and would make the Spark a very good buy.

I wouldn't guarantee that the current 250g drone limit won't change when CASA bring in registration. I honestly would not be surprised if they go further than the 200g limit that Japan has and say "anything that flies with propellers". What makes 249g the magic safety number? What I'm saying is hope the laws don't change but be prepared if they do!

My vote goes to Mavic Mini too :)

    • The 250g is for mainly for the U.S and U.K markets that do have registrations for the U.S. and introducing in the U.K. (this month I believe).
Here CASA haven't put anything down, so it could be anything when its introduced.

  • Dunno if we can merge but I had similar thoughts in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493055 also per the fimi discussion in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493643 I wanted the fimi too but the flakey firmware/software makes me nervous.

I'll be heading down the mavic mini path I think. 4K video would be great but as I see it that's about the only benefit.

Beside 4k video, X8 SE also comes with a lot more smart flying modes just like Mavic Air.

The main drawback of Mavic mini is lack of various smart flying modes of Mavic Air. Because Mavic mini use the newly developed simplified yet much less functions DJI flying software.

      • Fair point.I wonder if it's capable of some or all and just a firmware update away… Of those it's missing active tracking seems to be the most useful.

        • I would say in order not to cannibalise thier other products, they will keep restrict mini to its current capabilities

      • Smart but doesn't have any obstacle avoidance, or does it?

        • Neither do

    • How to merge?
