Incorrectly Charged an Uber Cleaning Fee

I took a short, uneventful Uber pool ride a couple of days ago.

This evening Uber messaged me to say I had been charged $80 cleaning fee because I left a mess in the car. When I got dropped off the driver nor the other pool passenger in the back seat complained to me about any mess (because there was none). I was dropped off first.

Uber have not responded to any of my messages asking for a review/refund.

Has anyone else experienced being slugged an incorrect cleaning fee and been refunded by Uber?? Thanks

That's pretty common scam for Uber drivers to get money out of passengers

    Do a chargeback?

PS: I wonder if you can just get a Westfield Giftcard, and use that as a burner credit card? That way, you can use the small funds for those odd times, but in the case of unauthorised charges, it won't be possible as its above the limit (-$1).

No - Westfield gift cards are "EFTPOS" cards, which can't be used online. You can potentially use a pre-paid visa/mastercard, but I'm not sure if Uber accepts them. You can probably work around it by using paypal linked to a pre-paid visa/mc.

Uber does a pre-auth when you make a booking, so you need to make sure your card has enough available on it to complete your journey.

Have a couple of the 'Only 1 Visa Gift Card' gift cards and that worked for Uber Eats. I guess if it works for UE it should work when you ride with Uber?

Hope I can get a refund…Uber seems to be turning a blind eye to these scams.

  • That's why you shouldn't support a company that started illegally and continues to prove itself unethical.

True, but I'd still take Uber over a taxi.

      • But what if they didn’t have space in the back for a 6 pack and kebab?

Order a taxi next time. A lot less dodgy stuff. (For the best experience, you need to make sure you have cash though) If you pay any other way they will do other random things which probably shouldn't be mentioned.

The taxi industry deserves to die a slow death.

      • Look it’s sad for individual drivers especially if they own/bought there own plates but as a group they are (partly) responsible for the poor service, lack of innovation and predatory tactics of Cabcharge etc.

Messages or did you click on the trip then click "Trip issues and refunds"?

Normally takes ~48 hours. I've always received a refund when needed.

  • I've only had 1 bad uber experience, where a driver in Melbourne got very lost taking me to the airport resulting in a much larger fee than it should have been and me feeling rather stressed about the potential of missing a flight. Filed a Trip Issues/Refunds claim, ticked the option about the driver getting lost, and had the entire trip refunded within a few hours.

Have you done similar or did you send them an email?

  • I contacted Uber on FB messenger a couple of times about it. After the second message they refunded me this afternoon.
Now have to remember to take pics of the Uber as I leave to show it’s clean in case it happens again!

or wear a nappy in future

  • Uber must provide an image of the mess that the driver has taken. I believe the driver almost always has to take a photo, attach it to the mess claim and then that serves as proof. I vomited once and didn't remember, contacted Uber and they sent me the images… I conceded.

  • However the linked news article above says that some drivers stage the fake vomit photos (?)
