Which Credit Card to Keep for Best Ongoing FF Value, AmEx Platinum Edge or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black?

Hi,

I currently have 2 credit cards,

American Express Platinum Edge with 162804 points and ANZ Frequent Flyer Black which is new, but came with 80000 Qantas FF points.

Now, I'm a bit confused which one gives me more value?

I am trying to save towards a first class or at least business ticket and have so far
accumilated most points on my Amex Edge.

Which card should I keep for my ongoing points collection and would it not make sense to convert all my Amex points over to ANZ?

Thanks in advance :)

  • neither. just sign up to new credit card deals every couple of months and you will be swimming in points

You're carrying 162,804 Plat Edge points.. just after the massive April devaluation. I presume most of these points were earn before April ? The points lost half their value after that and you should've converted them. That's potentially 80,000 Krisflyer points lost.

  • Never chase two rabbits, you end up catching neither.

    • Don't agree.. the points don't easily expire. So it's very possible to build up points in both. Each cards are best at different things. Amex Plat Edge gives 3 points per dollar at Supermarkets (1.5 Krisflyer point per dollar now). ANZ Freq Flyer Black gives 1 Qantas point per dollar generally.

      • Yeah you are right, even I disagree with my comment. [especially that I counted I have six airline programs that I actively collect points with and two additional ones with no points but they help me with award seat searching.]

  • Are you intending to churn (apply for new cards for the bonus points)?

If the answer is yes, then my recommendation after doing the below is to cancel both cards and serve the 'waiting period' so that you can get another set of bonus points in the future. This can be between 12-18 months per card.

There are so many credit cards in existence that it is easy to find other ones to use in the meantime, so long as you can take the credit hit(s)

    At the moment (note- I am also new to using points) but my suggestion would be;

    • transfer your Amex points to Velocity as there is a current bonus promo (15% for Amex https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493330 ) on until end of November. With that amount of points you'll have enough at least for one way business class to Europe.

The bonus QFF points you have should also be enough for an economy flight to/from Europe, when i researched myself business class redemption from Qantas needed less points than Velocity! Of course the city you leave from and your destination will affect the points required for redemption.

The only thing is that each points are affiliated with their own airlines, so each flight might be with a different provider.

QFF is also unique in that they offer redemption for a round the world flight which i think is around 210,000 points.

The above is based on my personal research into using my points (170k Velocity) for Europe flights in business class for 2020

  • Apparently there is a QFF deal to going on +20% on points, now I dont know if I should transfer to Velocity OR Qantas…

I dont know what will help you grow a pair and make an informed decision.

  • You cant convert your Amex MR to Qantas. Perhaps that might assist in your decision.

    • Thanks, I just found this out recently. Not sure what to do, leaning towards keeping the ANZ card - But not sure what to do with the Ascent points…

      • Where are you based? If you are based in Perth, I would suggest the velocity/krisflyer route. For eastern states and for ease of earning QF, go Qantas.

        • I am in Sydney - What about transferring to another FF program and from them to Qantas?

@KoalamanX: There is no way I can think of, that can lead to it going to QF ultimately.

You could go the Asia Miles route?

            • @starburstyellow: Europe or South America (maybe America) will be my destinations. So looking at transferring straight to Emirates Skywards and similar…

@KoalamanX: Transfer your MR points to Asia Miles.

Asia miles is great for ultra long flight. 85k you can fly Cathy Pacific to Europe or America, and a free stop over at Hong Kong. SYDNEY-HONGKONG- EUROPE OR USA

Or 90k you can fly Qatar Quiste, world best business class. SYDNEY-DOHA-EUROPE OR USA

Or 90k you can fly Qantas to USA then fly Cathy to Hongkong.

                • @Buy Buy Buy: I was just about to transfer them all to Velocity. Thanks for the info mate, really appreciate it!

                • @Buy Buy Buy: In your opinion, do you think it would be smarter to transfer all my Amex points to Velocity or Asia Miles?

                  • @KoalamanX: Asia miles mate. Unless you have exciting velocity just want to top up for a specific flight
