I drove past Mitre 10 Bayswater during the week and saw that they were advertising mulch for $29 a cubic metre. I have since ordered several cubic metres of the stuff which is good quality. I don't know when the deal ends but it is worth checking out.
Might also want to check aborists. Always a free pile outside the one near me. As for a trailer, see people with just a tarp in their boot.

Is this the crap they make out of green waste collected from the green bins for example.

Correct, but you can't be picky and have to take whatever load they have. Two months ago we got around 20m3 dumped on our driveway for the front yard. The alternative for the arborist was to take it to a landscaping company 30 mins drive away. We're down to 1/3 of that now.
I doubt the landscaping supplier would of taken it as hard to resell it

Green mulch that is not aged can suck nitrogen from soil leading to nutrient deficiency in plants. Need to add fertiliser before putting green mulch.

You might want to also check with your local council, some give away excess for nothing. There was a recent deal about that. Need to organise a trailer though
