Surface Laptop 3 vs Dell XPS13

Hi,

I am looking for a laptop and tossing up between the Dell XPS13 and Surface laptop 3.

The primary use will be remoting into work via citrix. Mostly while travelling.

The dell is more portable which is important to me but I think I prefer the aspect ratio of the surface.

Price is similar spec for spec. Which has better build quality?

Would appreciate any thoughts.

  • You can easily compare them yourself at JB's

  • The Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 has the same aspect ratio as the Surface Laptop, as well as Thunderbolt 3 and a more powerful CPU (I think).

    • I second the XPS 13 2-in-1. It gets Ice Lake (and Iris Plus) instead of the 9.5 gen 14nm Comet Lake of regular XPS 13. Also much more flexible with tablet mode, and more compact than the other two.

Microsoft's 2019 line-up is a mess this year, so I'd avoid a Surface full-stop. Pro X is getting shredded by reviewers. Surface Laptop and Pro designs are virtually unchanged (in the Pro's case, unchanged for years). MS finally caved to USB C, but none of those ports support Thunderbolt 3. Instead, you get the proprietary Surface Connector, presumably to upsell you the compatible Surface Dock if you want more I/O.

  • If you don't need to dock with usbc then SL3 is fine. You can get metal rather than carpet now on the keyboard.

  • I was deciding between these two and ended up getting Lenovo X1 Carbon in the end. I liked the durability factor of Carbon.

  • Thanks for all of this input guys. Really helpful. I never need to dock so thats not really a concern.

I will check out the xps 2 in 1. I'd never really thought about it because it will only be used in laptop mode but might be worth it for the more spreadsheet friendly aspect ratio alone.
