Please find me the best deal on Dyson vacuum cleaner DC19 or similar good performance vacuums

Hi

I am looking for the best deal on a good vacuum cleaner, currently considering the Dyson bagless Vacuum model DC19y. Cheapest price I have found so far is just under $400 @ HN end of financial year sale.

Can anyone comment on the HN price or the Dyson model? Or suggest a similar performing/price range vacuum cleaner of another brand?

thanks heaps

  • I know DJ's and Myer have a 15% off on small appliances.

  • My first Dyson was the basic model and it was a poor performer especially on mats and carpet etc. Make sure you get one with a turbine brush head attachment. My current one is the turbine model with telescopic wand and wrap around design - much better than first one. Got it at Harvey Norman, you can haggle with them on price pretty well.

    • Our consumer magazine seems to have the same opinion as Gretchen. Powerheads are the way to go, unfortunately they add to the price.

  • thanks everyone for your help! I would like to share my experience here…in two version

In short, I bought the Miele S5210 after doing some research and shopping around and asking politely for a cash price…. I got it for $290 with original price being $399 ! Best vacuum I have used, great build , made in germany. Highly recommended if you are looking in the $200-$500 range.

    The long version -

After deciding to invest in a good vacuum as I get allergies from dust….i decided to join CHOICE magazine online and read the reviews first…costs $21 to join..but well worth it…
    here is what I found:

    1. Bagless models aren't always the most powerful. They might look very nice..but they just aren't the best value in terms of performance/cost.
The test results show the conventional barrel vacuums with bags offered performances (occupied top 2 spots in the mid price $399-599 and expensive price range tests $599-$999)

    2. Powerheads/turboheads helps most of the time (some turboheads actually decreased performance for some reason)but expect to pay extra $100-$200 for about 5-10% increase in performance.

    3. Always ask, nicely, for the best cash deal - the best price for the model i wanted was $349 in the catalogues, arm with this info I was ready to haggle the Harvey Norman salesperson for their 110% price guarantee…however before I did I saw the floor price was ONLY $329. But being the a true bargain hunter, I asked nicely for a cash price..and the guy gave it to me for $290! (always ask for the best cash price!) Not too bad, i thought, knocking off $110 /27% off the RRP.

The model I bought is the Miele s5210 with 2200W (came 2nd on the mid price range with rrp of $399) which had a overall score better than most/more expensive models in the reviews. It performed a lot better than other models that costs upwards of $600 -$800 range such as the Dysons' (without powerhead) and Eletrolux bagless.

I tasted the Miele as soon as I got home….It is nicely build, made in Germany. Feels solid without being too heavy. Has all the essential attachments and a telescopic arm on board, and all feels like they are made with good quality material and comes with 2 year warranty. It moves around easily on the carpet and it is compact for storage. Its the best vacuum i have used so far…it picked up so much hair and dirt!! It is also quieter compared to my other Philips Vac…(mind you, i got nothing to compare it with as it is the first expensive vac i have bought)

I also would suggest getting a gadget from Godfreys store - Delux Cyclonic Separator an add-on attachment on your vacuum hose. It claims to separates 95% of dust into an easily emptied can which is reusable and save you from replacing bags regularly.. effectively making your vacuum "Bagless" …the salesperson said you don't loose suction, it is easier to clean and use than most bagless vac bins, and you only need to replace the bag once a year but don't quote me on it….. In real use, i think you do loose a little bit of suction at the beginning..but you are also compensated as you can emptied the attachment easily, therefore as the filter bag doesn't get clogged so you don't loose suction along the way. I emptied out 4 cans today after vacuuming the whole house, but there was only smallest hint of dust in the filter bag inside the vacuum..so I would say it works really well.

Hope this helps people in buying a vacuum cleaner!
