New 16" MacBook Pro

Currently running a 2013 MacBook Pro with proper keyboard, escape key, HDMI and two USB ports, but battery is completely exhausted.

Looking at this new MacBook Pro announced overnight. Among its exciting new features are it's 'magic' keyboard, dedicated escape key. But the thing that makes me think twice is the cost of RAM and storage bumps. $600 for 16gb RAM seems a bit nuts.

Anyone else tempted?

  • Mildly tempted. I replaced the battery in my 2012 13” a while ago with a~$90 Battery I found on eBay. It’s worked fine over the last couple years and gave it a new lease on life!

While it's good to see Apple updating products and including new processors, more ram and HDD I think a 15" (16") laptop is too big for portable use. 13" - 14" is the perfect size.

    • So buy the 13"

  • I'm wondering why they didn't use 10th gen i7 and used 9th gen instead. Does anyone know the reason?

They are not out yet. Only ~15W 10th gen CPU's are available. The 45W CPU's will be available in a few months

  • The top of the line seems pretty good value to me. $4400 so $4k with 10% off, and includes a 1TB ssd. Ram isn’t amazing, but then OSX doesn’t use a lot.

      Apps do.

      • I guess that depends what you do. I’ve never needed more in Premiere and Photoshop with only 16gb Ram on my current MacBook Pro. I’ve not even noticed a massive difference in render times compared to my 3600X PC with 32gb Ram.

  • I will probably wait for a sale to buy one and then sell my 2017 MBP.

  • So consensus is the 16gb ram the two stock models come with is enough for Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Chrome all running at once? Because my 2013 MBP has 16gb and it is struggling HARD.

Would love to bump the ram to 32gb just to be safe, but doing so means I can't just wait for the standard 10% off sale at JB or the like.

This video provides a good overview. Covers photo and video editors as well as general use.

They did recommend 32GB for photo editing, as you said, because it's CTO it limits access to discounts.

I'm looking at getting the new Macbook too. I will probably bump up the RAM to 32GB (my current iMac is using 25GB at the moment) and will most likely upgrade the graphics card to the 8GB version.

I will hold off until Black Friday (and my wife has recovered from hearing the price) in case they do any gift card deals or something like that… a free set of AirPod Pros would be awesome!

  • I would wait for a while to see if this new "re-designed keyboard" has any issue. The last butterfly keyboard design was so terrible.

  • Absolutely keen!
