Want to Build a Home Karaoke System

Hi OZB,

i want to build a home karaoke system, a simple one. Doesn't need to cost me arm and legs.

i was thinking to use my laptop as the system to display on my TV, and just hook a few mics up to a speaker.

Or possibly hook 2 mics to my laptop?(i'm not sure if this is possible)

Would appreciate if anyone can point me to something / something to buy that can make this happen.

Thanks.

I'll wait for the post about annoying neighbours with a new karaoke set up. :)

The cheapest, semi-reliable method you could use would be something like this (for $80). It has a 3.5mm audio in and out, so you could connect you laptop to it for music as well. I'm not sure how your audio system works, but here's a few ways you can do it:

    • Laptop —> microphone system —> sound system (if you have a sound system)
    • Microphone system —> laptop —> tv (if your tv has, or is connected to a sound system with only 1 input (i.e. the TV), you'd also have to set up your computer to 'listen' to the mic and need both audio in and out on the laptop)
    • You could also just have the mic on its own speakers

I'm not entirely sure on your budget, but if you're interested, for the set-up I went with I purchased a mixer and a microphone system (about $300 total) for 4 microphones. This was the mixer ($150), and its advantages are basically more fine control over each mic, use of PA speakers and sound effects. It also has multiple inputs, so I am able to expand the number of mics later on and it acts as a nice medium for everything connecting to my sound system. These are the microphones ($160). Compared to the ones I linked above (aside from having 4 instead of 2 mics), it allows you to take the inputs from each individual mic (and adjust it accordingly), however it only has XLR or 1 single 6.5mm jack as outputs. I just use the youtube app on my AppleTV, so this is how my audio is connected:

    • AppleTV —> TV —> Mixer <— microphones, iphone, etc.
    • Mixer —> sound system

If you have any questions about either of these set-ups, I'll try my best to point you in the right direction :)

    • Thanks mate, currently i have a laptop that is connected to the TV via HTMI, and the TV is connected to a Logitech speaker.

question. i wonder how to connect multiple sound input (mic) to laptop? Do i need a software? or the mic will just do it by itself?

  • I have a 5.1 System with a receiver. What is the cheapest way to hook up two mics and use Youtube videos for Karaoke??

My current setup is just TV -> Receiver with HDMI ARC. I don't think the receiver has a 3.5mm jack - just HDMI and optical.

I am willing to use my laptop but would prefer a standalone system.

    • By standalone do you mean you want to use your TV to play YT?

      • As in, I would prefer not to use a laptop.

Ideally, I want both mic and Youtube to come through the speakers.

I assume the receiver is required to power your 5.1 system? If your receiver only has optical & htmi, then you might need to buy convertors.

          Basically, you will need:

          1. a mixer, something like this (https://www.amazon.com.au/1002FX-BEHRINGER-XENYX/dp/B000J5SY…) with or without FX function is up to you. But with FX you can add echo into your voice using the mixer.

          2. mics + XLR cables to connect mic to mixer.

          3. Assuming your TV has RCA or 3.5mm jacks, you can connect your TV to mixer using (https://www.amazon.com.au/Homyl-Instrument-Audio-Cable-Ampli…) or (https://www.amazon.com.au/HOMYL-Stereo-3-5mm-Audio-Splitter/…)

          4. Output mixer to receiver (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDMI-Male-to-3-RCA-Audio-Video-A…)

Don't quote me on number 4, because I'm not sure if that cable will work. You might need an adapter for this. (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Composite-AV-CVBS-3RCA-RCA-to-HD…)

          good luck have fun.

          • @kekw: Thank you for such a detailed response!! I just want to clarify exactly what is happening:
            - The TVs YT music will be sent to the Mixer
            - 2 mics will be connected to the mixer
            - The mixer will then be outputting both audio sources to the receiver
            - Receiver will then play whatever is sent by Mixer

Please let me know if this is correct

Is there a way to replace the need for a mixer by using a laptop? Connect the mic to laptop and 'mix' voice with computers internal youtube? I would then be able to connect the laptop via hdmi to the Reciever and maybe screenshare youtube on my TV. Please let me know if this is possible.

              @MoreThanYouNO: Yes. That's the concept.

I'm not exactly sure because I haven't tried this yet. But probably won't give you the best experience.

You will need some software like Audacity (free) to mix your input and then some how output it. These software are more for recording.

Or use the good old trick to enable "listen to this device" in the sound control panel.

              No worries, happy to help.
