  • I am guessing Steam is gearing up to compete with Epic.

    • +9

Nah, developers have always been given the option to give away free games for a time period. Steam has a history of this before epic was on the scene.

    • +7

No, I don't think so. It could mean the game will be given away somewhere else too beforehand.
In its T&Cs Steam forces devs to give away the game for free on Steam too if they previously gave it away elsewhere such as on HB, GMG, Fanatical etc.
If they want to compete with Epic they have to give away different games and more regularly for maximum exposure.
The short duration makes me assume it is a "forced" giveaway.

      • +1

Interesting downvote. Everything you said is true.

    • Steam doesn't choose to give away games, the devs do. Also Steam doesn't need to compete with Epic.

      • +3

Good one. Read the T&Cs for devs - you will find Steam forces devs to do so in circumstances mentioned above - in those circumstances it is NOT a choice.
Re Steam: Losing $300+ million in sales is not peanuts for them either.

In case you forgot: even super dominant players can fail if they are arrogant: see AOL for example.

In case you forgot: even super dominant players can fail if they are arrogant: see AOL for example.

Kinda frightening thinking of Steam cacking it with how much money we've poured into it.

          • @Carnal: If Steam were to fail; I'm sure there'd be a deal worked out for another platform to merge licences like Steam did with alot of the Games For Windows Live catalog when Microsoft pulled the activation server. I'm sure someone would be up for a lawsuit if all this just up ended one day leaving purchased goods non-existent.

            • @BradH13: If steam went down under, I'm pretty sure (or I think I read it somewhere from someone official but forgot where) they would release a patch to be able to play all your games offline, without some of the steam online services of course, which some games depend on to work, like the master server browser for multiplayer or coop games as an example…

This is why I support DRM-free - i.e GoG, if the game platform goes down under, at least I will still have access to the games I bought whenever I want.

        • You claim Steam needs to give away games for exposure though. We all know that isn't true. It was (and still is) the industry leader for PC games. Anyone who plays PC games knows Steam and what they are. Valve is a multibillion dollar, multinational company that deals in software, hardware and a ton of in-between.

@Tacooo: Hm, and Epic is what? A start-up company?
Without constant exposure you lose market share to competition - that is true for any industry, not just gaming.
Steam is in top now but if they are complacent now that dominance can disappear quickly too, through competition, regulation and other measures/events.

          • +2

@Tacooo: Lysander also didn’t claim steam needed to do giveaways for exposure. All they said was that the giveaway is their standard practice and it might have been a forced giveaway.

            • @SlappersOnly:

If they want to compete with Epic they have to give away different games and more regularly for maximum exposure.

              That's literally what he claimed.

              • +1

@Tacooo: Yes. In the context of giveaways. If they want to compete with Epics giveaways strategy they need to give away different games and more regularly.

              • +1

@Tacooo: But as SlappersOnly said you have taken it out of context. Compare the last 12 months of giveaways on Steam and Epic (age of games, prices of games, did games go free to play shortly after giveaway, regularity etc.) and you will see huge differences.
Whether people like it or not, in the last 12 months Epic had huge publicity for their strategy and giveaways - this will pay off. The biggest pieces of publicity Steam had was their reaction Metro Exodus being pulled (which they since have apologised for) and the Court Judgement stating that user must be able to sell their Steam games on (although of course the appeal deadline has not passed yet so the decision is not in force yet).

Will somebody REUP this in 18 days for me? Cheers…

    • Ditto. The reminders don't work for me.

      • Technically or you forget still?

        • +1

I guess I need to remember to check my reminders.

        • I found "Reminders" hidden under "Edit" in my profile. Hopefully I can remember that's where they are.

Poised and at the ready for 4 am.

    • Hi

    Tomorrow December 5, 2019 – 04:00:00 AEST (10+ UTC)

    • It’s 4am and still not showing as free.

  • +1

    Available now :)

  • Is it worth buying the complete version?
    Or rather, the DLC?

  • It is active NOW everybody. Get it before 4:00am tonight.
It is only free for ONE DAY.

    Enjoy!

  • Anyone else notice the little disclaimer on the page before you add it:

Free to keep when you get it before 5 Dec @ 10:00am. Some limitations apply. (?)

When you hover over the (?) you get this little popup:

While supplies last. Games granted during free-to-keep promotions do not drop Steam Trading Cards.

    • Standard. Has been there for about a year now.

  • Next Steam freebie - Draw Slasher.

  • The game has average reviews and is notorious for causing motion sickness so I'll pass. I'm sure there are other better free alternatives.

    • What's motion sickness like? I don't think I've ever experienced this ever playing a game…

    Ehh free is free. 🤷‍♂️
