(CHOICE Poll) Do You Think The ABC Should Bring Back The Checkout?

Wish The Checkout was still on? Seems you're not the only one!

CHOICE has posed this question in an email campaign, and I want to share it.

"Did you watch The Checkout on ABC TV? From 2013 to 2018, this show shone a spotlight on bad business practices and helped millions of Australians get clued up on our rights…Do you think the ABC should bring back The Checkout?"

    Definitely. Great program.

    Used a disposable email address.

    Poll?

  • I really wonder if part of the reason that The Checkout got cancelled was because of businesses threatening lawsuits? I have absolutely no idea if this is true or not, but it would make sense to me if that’s why it was canned.

Edit: I should clarify that I think it’s BS if that’s why it was cancelled but I can see why ABC might do it if someone was threatening them.

I got the impression that they ran out of interesting things to cover. Maybe the show will return when there are new products and services in the market.

      • Ah. Well that could be it then. If it wasn’t relevant anymore, as an info program it would lose its basic appeal. Probably more likely than my idea about the lawsuits too.

Yeah, how about the disposable plastic bags thing for instance.
Starting this month obviously they've banned plastic bags but some retailers like Chemist Warehouse still provide bags free of charge, the only difference is they're slightly thicker so they count as being reusable. It's an ironic situation because I'm throwing these thickened plastic bags in the bin instead of the more easily degradable ones.
I reckon they could find a few things to cover.

Plastic bags can be recycled at most Woolworths and Coles supermarkets. You can also use them as bin liners.

It wasn't. ABC was going through more cuts that year, and they had to decide on which shows to keep and which to axe. Plus it's cheaper sometimes to get overseas made content. The Checkout didn't know that they weren't being renewed until the day before the announcement was made. I think Alex is now on the Feed on SBS and I think Ben is still writing at the ABC.

Ah ok. Thanks for the info :) It sucks that consumers don’t still have the same content, but if it meant that ABC could get some better or more variety of content from overseas then maybe it’s best? I guess they could always pick it up again if they really wanted.

I voted to bring it back.

  • so did I

Yeah I quite liked that show. When it ended I figured they ran out of things to cover, but given the subject matter it does cover current events so they should be able to keep making episodes. I enjoyed the humour and informative approach.
Some of the segments got a bit whingey at times, and to me some parts felt like filler but overall it was worth watching if you care about consumerism.
