Camera Suggestions for Company Use

Hi all, hope this is appropriate!

I'm doing digital marketing work at a not-for-profit, and I'm in need of a decent camera to film/photograph for staff profiles, cover events, and otherwise be a good all-rounder. Preferably, I want a camera that isn't too complex to point and shoot if other members of the team don't have time to fiddle with settings to get good results.

The kicker: our budget is about ~$500, maybe $600/$700 if it's justified, but that's probably exceeding my actual use case. The camera system isn't needed immediately, so I'm happy to wait on any good bargains people suspect might be around the corner i.e., Black Friday etc. Just wanted some suggestions about models that I should keep an eye on for my price point.

Thanks guys, any input is appreciated! :)

    Suggested Canon PowerShot G7 X

In your case you need a powerful point and shoot.

Canon PowerShot G7 X pops into mind. The newest, Mark III, is out of your budget. The previous, but still excellent, Mark II, will be within your budget if you wait for a sale event which is rapidly approaching!!!!!!

    Good luck.

  • Really if you want simple point and shoot just use your phone. Any recent model phone should have at least a decent camera with many being very good.

Use your budget to pick up a mount, tripod and external mic if required for your purpose. Power bank as well if you'll be using it a lot.

If you want to get more advanced buy something like the Filmic Pro app and learn to use it. You'll probably be surprised by what a phone camera can produce.

    • Unfortunately for professional work, phone cameras are still poor in terms of image quality (especially under low light conditions) and handling. A $500 camera still trumps a $2,000 iPhone in almost every way except for portability.

  • Just use your phone and brush up on "technique".

We have an array of relatively new P&S at work for site audits and the phone works just as good/better.

  • ~$500 budget? Sounds like all you need is a decent ~$200 Sony/Nikon/Canon point and shoot.

  • Thanks for the suggestions all. Phone is a bit tricky because my company phone is an iPhone 6 that's showing it's age, and my V30+ isn't available to the whole team.

The Canon PowerShot G7 X might be the ticket; but I'll consider whether anyone has a particularly good camera in their phone too.
