Sydney Air Pollution - Anyone Else Got Sick?

I havent been sick for at least 10 years or so, not even common cold. Only 1 food poisoning incident and gum disease couple of years ago.

Woke up with headache, stuffed nose and sore throat. Called in sick. GP said its most likely a common cold and there are a surge of people coming in with similar issues. Thought everything was fine till I saw my xiaomi purifier reading at 154. The highest reading I could remember was 60 or so. Im fine with common cold but fine dust and other lung cancer risks are not cool.

Should I be worry or its just me being paranoia?

  • I woke up the same, a really sore throat and with a fever, and felt way too sick to work. I feel completely dead.

lucky you just feeling it, i am dead already i dont even realised how i can type these

      • +4

You can still type because the T virus maintains your motor function.

        • My motor is in the shop

        • Fever gone but itchy. Hungry and eat doggy food. Itchy itchy Scott came. Ugly face so killed him. Tasty.

          Itchy.
          Tasty.

    • Eyes are burning, stuffy nose, itchy throat. Still going to work. :(

  • Got a fever on Tues night after walking to and from work in the smoke haze :(

  • My theory is that the migrating shearwaters flew into bushfire smoke along the NSW coast causing the huge numbers of deaths. They had flown all the way from Alaska and many dropped dead near the Australian coast.

I doubt that you haven't had a cold in 10 years, you probably just generally show weak symptoms. The smoke has exacerbated your symptoms this time.

  • Woke up a bit sick as well, I'll switch on my air purifier when I get home, but didn't realise it until I started feeling a little nauseous this morning. feels odd since I live in the city too, I worry to think how others closer to the fires are dealing.

  • Im fine with common cold but fine dust and other lung cancer risks are not cool.

Lung cancer? Being a little melodramatic there.

Just because you haven't been sick in 10 years, doesn't mean you can't get sick. You'll live. Carry on.

Chronic exposure to small particles increases lung cancer risk by about 10%.

A few days high exposure won't blip your probabilities. If it carries on all summer though…

      • Chronic exposure to small particles increases lung cancer risk by about 10%.

More melodramatic people I see thinking a few days of smoke in the air will give you lung cancer.

        • +2

I certainly don't think just a few days of smoke in the air will give you lung cancer, in fact I specifically said "chronic" exposure, so let's not get melodramatic and make pointless accusations OK?

Worried about the particulates? Just stop breathing until the reading on your energy-sucking-doesn’t-do-much-filter drops back to normal.

  • Yeah I was sick last week and my wife and son have been sick this week, not sure if it was the smoke that caused it but that's what I'm blaming.

  • I'm near Newcastle and cant even see the sky today. Other day it was a case of not being able to see across the street clearly. My PM2.5 readings were 300+.

Sure enough, yesterday, hayfever symptoms. Blocked nose, sore face, aching top row of teeth. Knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time…

  • Not sick, but the throat has been sore the past couple days. Definitely due to the smoke.

  • Saw this on fb: The cognitive costs of air pollution. https://patrickcollison.com/pollution

Can one be aware of cognitive declines?

  • I'm sure those who are sifting through the ashes of their homes will be saying a prayer for you tonight op. Get well soon.

The smoke got me. I got bronchitis. Ain’t nobody got time for time for that.

    • you're probably still coughing! I got that once running once in smoke, coughed for weeks.

It's funny getting stares by locals when I wear a P2 mask. Suckers…

      • Where do you buy these masks? breathing is kinda difficult lately for me. I have ones that apparently block dust, dirt and bacteria, with no pm rating.

Edit : nvm found it, officeworks!
