Amazon Charged Me Twice for "Authorisation"

Has anyone else experienced this?

I've ordered a $9.99 item on 19/11 which was charged during the date of purchase (as normal) however i just got another charge for 9.99 today for the same item. I know it's the same because I only have one order pending on Amazon and I've done heaps of orders before, so not my first time.

Contacted Amazon support and they told me "don't worry it's just an authorisation charge". I then asked why were there two charges for 1 item… and apparently my 19/11 "authorisation" charge failed so they did it again without an email notifying me. It's insane that they could just take money like that… so now I'm out 20 bucks for an item that hasn't shipped yet. Lucky it was only a small amount but I'm pretty sure it could happen on bigger ones. They just said it will be back in 2-10 business days, which is not that big of a deal since it's a small amount, but I'm still surprised that's even possible.

Also, I've never even heard of authorisation pay from Amazon unless someone else can confirm it. I'm pretty sure pre-orders don't even take money til it's ready.

I know my best course of action is to wait but anyone else had this and came up with a different resolution?

So you're saying Amazon may have accidentally charged twice because the first payment may have failed.

They've remedied this by providing a refund if it was indeed double charged.

What else are you hoping for?

    • I guess I'm just concerned that they charged me without even notifying me that the first one failed even though it looked like any normal transaction. I only found out as I got a notification that I paid 'Amazon' again without ordering another product so that kinda spooked me.

It will happen a lot in your lifetime. The more we use electronic fund transfers and e-commerce, the more we are exposing our authorization to third parties.

Check your statements and notify the biller if there's a mistake.

This won't be the last time. It's an honest mistake that I have been on both sides of.

this happens all the time with any Debit or Credit card.

Whats worse is when its a Debit card and a expensive transaction such as flights ( happens a lot with flights for some reason ) , ultimately it just puts the funds on hold twice until one charge drops off as if it never happened.

    • Ah! I did use a Debit card on this. It just sucks that I won't be able to use the missing 10bucks for a timeframe lol. I was spooked as i thought my details were compromised since I never got an Amazon email and my bank is saying it's an Amazon purchase.

  • The opposite just happened to me. Item was delivered and a few hours later the transaction charge was cancelled by amazon

    • quick. cancel your card and Amazon account.

    TL:DR
Customer appalled by amazon charging their card twice for the same purchases.

This was due to authorisation initially failing.

When contacted Amazon said only one charge will come through in 2-10 working days.
