6 Months Free ADSL 2+ at Exetel

Exetel are offering 6 months free ADSL2+ on a 12 months contract if you also switch your phone to them.

Hence cost for 200 GB plan comes to $457.00 (including line rental)
When compared to my current plan TPG 150gb ($40) and Telstra $20 line rental
which is $60 per month = $720 for next year

The saving is $263

Thoughts? Should I go for it?
Please note that this much data is more than enough for me so I don't need to consider any bigger data plans.

  • I've been with them for about 5 years now, I've always been happy with the service & price! :)

That said, they are a budget ISP; which means that so long as you are patient & technically savvy enough to do your own stuff like setup & basic network troubleshooting then you can save quite a bit of money. However, they do have assistance available, IMHO their Sri Lankan support staff are always pleasant & competent, and my dealings with them have always been positive.

It is worth bearing in mind though, that the CEO John Linton is somewhat of a loose cannon; and his entire management team displays a thorough lack of tolerance for any dealings with either abusive or rude customers; or indeed any hint of TIO involvement in dispute resolution…that usually results in the customer being given 30 days to find another ISP (although with no contractual or financial penalty).

You'll find some horror stories about this on WP, but when you look at the actual correspondence of both parties you realise it's very much a two-sided coin of juvenility! ;)

  • did use them before the price rise.

they use to change price at will, so never know when they'll decide to charge you more.
hopefully if you are on contract you wont be effected.

    • Yep, they do have very frequent plan changes…I can't remember them ever asking me to shift even when OOC though! I tend to just watch the changes, & move voluntarily when it benefits me. :)

      • +1

Used them for a year and agree that they change their prices a lot. And when they increase it, you are forced to accept it or quit. No matter what rate you are on with your contract, their price hike affects all.

        • No, that's just plain wrong. They cannot legally increase the price within contract; every plan change email or forum post states that explicitly; and as stated they've never asked me to move once OOC - honestly, I don't think that they're well enough organised to keep tabs on users that way! ;)

I was just talking to a mate who's on the same plan as me, & well OOC…he hasn't heard a peep from them. :)

  • I have been on Exetel for 5+ years as well and have been pretty happy with them. Actually I have 1x ADSL2+ with phone line (50GB/180GB download quota), 2x mobile plans, 2x VoIP + 1x fax to email number with them and paying less than $70/month (we are not really heavy mobile users though).

  • Thanks a lot everyone. Finally decided to go for Exetel.

    • I don't think you'll regret it.

The best part is that you're saving a considerable amount of money anyway; and if for one reason or another you're not happy with the service somewhere down the track then it won't end up costing you an arm & a leg to churn away; you'll still be way ahead! :)
