ShopBack Earnings Disappearing without a Trace?

I just refreshed a tab that I had open on Shopback's Amazon page and noticed that my Lifetime Earnings dropped by around $30 compared to what they had been. I immediately went to look at my cashback activity to try and figure out what had happened.

Every entry in my cashback activity has a status of either confirmed or pending except for two that had been rejected, and the two rejected entries combined were less than $6. So why the hell has my total dropped by around $30?

For a while now I've been intending to make a quick spreadsheet to track my cashback activity and I guess that just got bumped way up the priority list!

The only explanation I can think of is that some of the entries in my Cashback Activity have disappeared (been deleted?) without trace. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

What did ShopBack say when you asked them?

    • +2

      no, hes angry now.

    • I haven't asked them yet and won't till I've done up a spreadsheet and know exactly what things should be… otherwise I'm just trusting them to tell me what they should be.

Sounds like a lot of work. Spreadsheets. Calculations.

        Why not just ask them?

        • Because I don't trust them? I was going to do it anyway…

          • @uvbunny: Trust or distrust after they give an explanation. Surely that's reasonable.

But hey, spend all the time you want. It's your time.

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: How will I know if their explanation is reasonable if I don't know where things stand for myself and have to take their word for everything anyway?

When I say I don't trust them, I don't necessarily mean that they're being malicious.

              • @uvbunny: Go for it!

I guess the lesson here is some of us value our time far more than others.

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Err, Thanks? And please don't waste any more of your valuable time responding to a thread that you apparently think was nothing but a waste of time.

                  • @uvbunny: No problem. Please report back how you go and when it's resolved.

                    • +2

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I certainly will, even if it turns out that I've somehow missed something obvious that makes me look like a fool :)

      They said ask OzBargain.

  • Over 12 months old?

    • I signed up to shopback in July last year but my first transaction wasn't until June this year.

  • Same thing just happened to me.

My balance was just above $90. Dropped to $87. I noticed an amazon order had been rejected. Contacted Shopback and they fixed it. Balance went back up.

A few days later it's back to $87. Nothing has been rejected so transactions must be missing. It's only a few dollars so I'm not going to bother with it but I would chase up $30 if I were you. They are usually quick to reply.

As I mentioned if there were $30 worth of rejected entries in my cashback activity at least I would know why the total had dropped.

I hadn't noticed before that I had any rejected cashbacks, and checking my email history a little earlier it seems they send you an email every time they confirm a cashback, but go strangely silent when they reject one!

instead of posting, why not speak to them?

      I like your logic.

I generally find it helpful to be in posession of as much information as possible before trying to sort out issues like this, thus wanting to calculate things for myself and seeking any other experiences here beforehand.

        • So you're happy to spend significant time potentially barking up the wrong tree when you could contact them and get a quick decisive answer?

          • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I don't know what to tell you zeggie. You seem to have a blind faith in shopback to be able to give a quick, decisive and correct answer that I don't share.

I've had enough experience dealing with errors on the part of large businesses to know that you're better off getting all your facts sorted out before trying to deal with low level support personnel.

            • @uvbunny: Blind faith? Not at all. Simply suggesting you ask the question to them. It could be resolved with one conversation. If it's not, or you're unsatisfied with their answer, then investigate to your heart's content.

              It's your time. Enjoy!

  • Doesn't surprise me with Shopback, I had too many issues so stopped using shopback, Happy with slightly less returns with cashrewards as it has less issues.

Just contact Shopback, it could be a bug that showing an incorrect amount… There was one time a few weeks ago my total earning went up and down on each refresh on the app, but then the next day it went back to normal.

    • Yeah I had a similar issue on the desktop, but this doesn't feel like that to me. But if it is like that then it should resolve itself before I get around to contacting shopback about it anyway.

I've had the same issue recently. My referral bonus was showing as pending and then one fine day suddenly it disappeared. Wondering why it happened I emailed them and they quickly added it. Definitely cheeky coz if I had not noticed it, the bonus was just gone. I make a note of my transactions as soon as I make them to be able to verify it easily.

    • Thanks for sharing that, if cashback entries can simply disappear from the record then you can't trust their system to keep an accurate account.

It's one thing to reject a cashback, another all together when they disappear from the system as if they never existed.

      • you get email notifications when they are received, it wouldnt be hard to go back and check them.

You've come in here with a bit of axe to grind. Keep in mind you haven't actually proven that they've done anything dodgy, the evidence so far is that the summary balance has changed

        • you get email notifications when they are received, it wouldnt be hard to go back and check them.

I don't know if that's always the case. I don't think for example you get notifications of bonus cashbacks, only regular ones.

You've come in here with a bit of axe to grind.

Are you the world's first physic psychologist or do you just play one on the internet?

          no, hes angry now.

I don't know what caused you to jump to that conclusion, nothing I posted here (certainly up to that point) was done with any anger at all.

Keep in mind you haven't actually proven that they've done anything dodgy

Nor have I accused them of doing anything dodgy. You seem to have read way too much into what I've posted without stopping to consider any other interpretation beyond your initial impression.

the evidence so far is that the summary balance has changed

And that there is no record of anything that would explain the change. Whether that's the result of dodgy behavior, issues with their system or just poorly thought out procedures on their part I don't know.

One other possible explanation occured to me after writing the initial post: that the reduction was the result of accidental duplicate entries being corrected (deleted). But even if that were the case they should have informed me and left a record of the change.
