Wireless / Cordless Phone

Am after a cordless phone for home use. Have a VOIP connection if that helps. Not fussed if its single or multiple phones.

  • Best brands are Panasonic or Uniden. I feel Panasonic are not that good look wise, but they are good in quality and sustainability.
I am using uniden bluetooth one with 3 handsets for my landline and panasonic single unit for VOIP. Panasonic are better battery wise and built wise. Uniden looks better and sleek, but quality is ok. not that great. But their reception is better than my single unit panasonic.
I bought my panasonic from ebay from a seller, selling refurbished panasonic phones and they are quite good. So if dont find any good deal from a store, you can buy from them. They give 1 year warranty too.

  • Remember to consider the frequency!

1.8MHz (DECT) tends to have better coverage than higher frequencies. The signal "penetrates" better, so better reception though multiple walls.

Also, the 1.8GHz band is unique to phones - 2.4GHz and 5.8MHz phones share the frequency allocation with other devices like WiFi, wireless AV senders, etc. Microwave ovens use 2.4GHz

A 2.4GHz phone will kill a standard Wireless (WiFi) internet connection dead in it's tracks. So those are not the go in many circumstances.

Generally, a 5.8GHz phone will have the worst "range", but then again they tend to be the more "upmarket" models so they may end up giving good service anyway. Also, a 5.8GHz uses a smaller antenna, or can use a better one for a given size… so it may well be that a 5.8 is the best bet.

  • We've had trouble with a few Uniden phones now. Won't be wasting our money on them again.

  • Thanks for all your replies, all taken into consideration.
I ended up as suggested with a Panasonic model DECT with twin handset + handsfree option. Cost me $39 delivered from that eBay link.
I have owned Uniden model before and was reluctant to try again as had poor battery performance.

For those who are interested in a cheap twin handset someone posted a $22 HN Uniden deal

    • DECT is good. They operate in 1.8 Ghz frequency. I bought Uniden 9135 ( can add mobiles thru bluetooth) with DECT 6 and it has been great. Personally I like Pana, then Uniden the most. Other phones with 1 or 2 line display look odd.
