Budget Specs for 4k Video Editing Laptop

I plan on getting a new laptop to use in video editing home movies (10 minute clips at most to share via youtube etc)

but shot in 4k with goPro and Dji drone and hoping to render in 4k for my 4K oled tv.

My question is, what are some budget specs I should be looking for in a 4k video editing laptop?

In the end maybe I will just buy a Surface Pro or Surface Laptop or Dell XPS but want to research cheaper options (under 1,200) first.

Let me know what I should consider also the software to get if you have a preference.

  • also the software to get

probably learn video editing on your desktop PC first before deciding what laptop to buy

software is your choice of preference + skill/knowledge on using one + determines what hardware requirements

if you're after a free pro 4k video editing software , try davinci resolve

  • There's a couple of these threads on here. So from those, it says Video editing is Cpu bound, then ram, then hdd speed, then look at gpu optimisations on the side. Thats my take on the other threads. maybe 16gb ram, ryzen for the core count + decent o/s ssd, Samsung evo and the like. Or i5 or i7 to reach the budget.

    • ryzen for the core count

erm, different story in laptop mobile cpu

  • I heard that video editing on Android phones (Sony and LG) are orders of magnitude faster than most laptops.
Most of the Tech Youtubers have jumped unto this bandwagon.
I don't have much experience with it, but you may want to look into it.

    • +1

No Professional Video Editor will edit their work on mobile. Disadvantages are too many to list here.

  • What's your budget?
Realistically how often/how much time do you spend editing?

Haven't edited videos in ages but when I used to on my old laptop with adobe premiere rendering could take a while but you could leave things to render and come back later.

I personally would want as much onboard storage as possible. Sure you can work of portable hard drive but its not ideal.

Also, are you a student? If so you may be able to get discounted or free adobe creative suite which includes adobe premiere.
