Brand name is important (it's a gift) so no Kogans or DSE house brands.
Somewhere like DSE or JB is preferred so we can get a 3 or 5 year extended warranty.(outside of the budget)
HD recording and Full Hd would be welcomed.

I got one of the Okano 32" from JB for $299 and it's great. Only HD not FullHD but at that size not that important. Works as a media player with USB in. Has PVR function (haven't played with this yet).

Yes, I suppose all lower brands like: Okano, Awa, Kogan, Vivo, etc have equivalent capabilities and quality. Its the margin kept by the retailer or the middle man, which make the cost.
Like cheap table fans in all retailers have different names, but manufacturer looks the same ( I have tried 2-3 retailers).
We can do the Vivo 32" for $319 (normally $339). It's Full HD and it has recording capabilities. I've been given authority to give you a special price of $65 for a 5 year warranty as well (ordinarily $80).

well if you're looking to get hd recording and full hd for the price you're asking for then you'll have to forget brand names as they will hardly offer both at the price you're looking for esp at 32 inches.
Probably the lowest samsung model at 32 inches could get you something under 500 dollars.
Otherwise, how about hisense? I know its not a major brand and something you're probably not interested in but they have some new ones with edge lit LED, great energy rating and 3 years in home replacement warranty. The fact its got 3 years on it, speaks highly for a tv considering most major brands have shunned longer warranties (most are 12 months) and many won't even come to your home. I've seen them being sold at JB HIFI and I would choose them over any other 'no name brand'. If you're fine with forking out more for extended warranty, go ahead.
also keep this in mind, 32 inches and under doesn't necessarily need to be full hd, as you'll have to be quite picky (and close) to see the difference. blu-ray/dvd dual tuner recorders do tv recording are a lot better then ones built into televisions.
