Rate My (Midrange) PC Upgrade

I'm hoping to take advantage of some of the sales at the moment, but I haven't built a new computer for myself since the Core 2 Duo came out. Currently using a PC that I have put together from eWaste and 2nd hand parts. These are the parts that I have chosen:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X $452.00 through Futu Online eBay after PITCH20 code
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB 2X16GB DDR4 $209.00 through Futu Online eBay after PITCH20 code
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X570-P/CSM $211.65 through shallothead eBay after PILGRIM15 code

eBay plus for free shipping.

Total: $872.65

I already have a case, PSU (EVGA G2 750W), GPU (GTX 980) and SSD.

I mainly do photo editing and a bit of light gaming.

Can anyone see any compatibility problems? Thanks in advance.

Personally I'd drop down to a Ryzen 5 3600, which can be had for under $270 at shallothead. From a price/performance ratio, you won't be getting 1.6x from the r7 3700x, there's very little reason to buy it atm unless the game codes are worth it to you.

I'd also drop down to a solid b450 board too, unless you plan on anything more than a mild overclock or need PCI-E 4.0. The MSI PRO-VDH MAX, which can be had for $110 at shopping express, is great value.

It's a good build, not the best value but will destroy anything you chuck at it.

You may also want to consider a gen4 nvme ssd as they are the main draw of x570, I would recommend the corsair MP600.

you might be able to get samsung B die ram for similar price or cheaper ram with black friday sales

  • Cheers everyone. I was thinking the X570 board for future proofing. The saving on the CPU going for the 3600 instead of a 3700X might be the sweet spot. NVME SSD is on the cards for down the track as currently my working photo storage is on my boot drive and platters. (backed up externally + cloud.)

  • ur 980 will severely bottleneck a 3600 even at 1080p, need 2080 at least. also get 2x8gb ram, 32gb is a waste. i got 2x8gb 3200mhz ripjaws V for $91.2, so i'd have 4 channel 32gb for less than ur dual channel price.

    • I haven't played any AAA game titles in years. The GPU isn't too important to me right now.

I was under the impression that B450, X570 etc. were only dual channel RAM capable and only the threadripper architechture supported quad channel.

I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom. Some video editing down the track as well so the extra RAM is handy.
