Full HD Televisions

Hi! Well i have a few questions to ask in regards to getting the best deal for a Full-HD tv!
Thanks in advance if you can help! And also, please don't get so one sided on Plasma V LCD, Brand V Cheapo…
everyone is allowed to say what they feel… without… persecution.. lol.

ok. this is what i really want:

  1. most definitely a Full-HD 1080P tv.. most likely 46" INCH or ABOVE (42" inch if the deal is really good..)

  2. i have a PS3 so have been seriously looking at BRAVIAs but looking at the list from
    http://hdtvprices.pbwiki.com/
the X-series KDL46X3100 46" is higher in price in Gold Coast area than in NSW area… :(

ie. someone in sydney can get it for $2800, but over here everyone wants $3400 ($3200 with cashback)

  1. however, i looked at JB-Hifi and was seriously considering this: Panasonic VIERA TH-50PZ700A 50" (127cm) Full-HD Digital Plasma TV [Model No: TH-50PZ700A]
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/images/2008/06/JBD088-730x180-panas…
its $3191… it's plasma, not a 100Hz, and has a constrast ratio of 5000:1 (which is low isn't it..but what is contrast ratio… can someone tell me?)

  2. of course, LG and Samsung have cheaper LCDs than Sony, but do you think i should wait to see their prices go down, seems like esp LG has just released new models.. and would like to wait, but isn't the Stocktake/End of Financial year sales the best to buy? or can things be cheaper later on…?

  3. budget: about $2500-$3000, but $3500 is absolute maximum

  • Hi Buddy,

I highly recommend the Philips Aurea - not because the look but also the quality.
I have done my research since end of last year and compare most brands. Finally I found Philips is probably the best in the market for Full HD. This model is made in Belgium but unfortunately it only come in 42 inch size.
Though the price for this model is not that cheap - I bought it from Bing lee for $3000 last month.

I also compare some other brands (Top of the range model)….

    1. Sony Bravia - this probably my second best and if you interest in full HD, pick either X series or XBR series, both made in Japan. Though I still prefer the X series as price difference quite much with the XBR and hardly notice the quality difference between those two. I suggest you visit their authorise dealer for better bargain price.

    2. Samsung
I always disagree if people says that Samsung is the best LCD brand, I have compared Samsung, Sony and Philps side by side and Samsung fall behind these two. For your information, Samsung always put a different contrast ratio to attract customer's interest. A sales person will definitely mention of its contrast ratio. Though best LCDs are those which hardly give a reflection but sharp picture and lowest refresh time.
Try to stand infront of the TV and switch it off - the Samsung LCD screen is the only LCD that give a reflection.

    3. Panasonic and Sharp - this two brand will cost a bit cheaper but quality wise, I think Sony still much better than these two

    4. Other brands (eg. LG, Uniden and other China model).
They are cheap and if you really just want an LCD full HD then check this Uniden - http://uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_tl42tz1_ab_index.asp
Contact Marcello Cordeschi at 0417 599 394 for a good bargain price.

Hope this is helpful for your LCD hunting….

  • hi thanks for the input shohoku!

i did see the philips model.. it's the one with the frame that lights up isn't it?
hmm, it is quite expensive (seems only Domayne stores sell it on the gold coast)… but i heard from an old forum post on OzBargain that the LCD division of Phillips went into liquidation.. at least in the USA though, but thought that it might be worldwide?!

also, i do know that 'X' series would be the best option for COST:QUALITY in the bravia series… the 'XBR' is much more expensive and the only foreseeable difference is that 'XBR''s frame is gun metal grey instead of black!
if i could get a good deal on the bravia X series 46" i'd buy it in a heartbeat… (~$2900)… but yeah, just using this forum to find any insight into other comparable options…

  • hi

My friend bought a Sony 46" X-series end of last year in Brisbane (or early this year) when the promotion with a free PS3 was on. He got it for $3500 at the time from JB, it was marked as $3900.

The other day i was in JB I also saw the 46" X-series for around $3100-$3200 range ( I could be wrong…need to double check!!). With a bit of haggling I am sure you can get it down to $2900. From past experience they usually take 10-15% off the floor price….just tell them you are willing to pay in full and ask for the best cash price! If you can't get that price in Gold Coast just drive down to Brisbane…although the fuel is expensive but its probably worth it. Good luck

  • u have 2 decide first which tv u want: plasma or lcd.

For plasma, panasonic's price is quite reasonable.
