Amazon deal of the day has some good prices on pens and accessories.
The Waterman fountain and steel jotter would make nice gifts for a graduating student.

  • Is the Parker Urban Fountain Pen Kit a good starter kit for beginner users of fountain pens?

    • +2

I wouldn't recommend that kit personally, both because the pen isn't that great and it's a lousy bargain.

Parker Urban fountain pens by themselves can be had for $20 or so if you're patient and wait for a good deal, and the extras in the kit are worth about $10-15 (unless that booklet is a lot better than I think it is!).

It's also not a particularly good pen. I own quite a few of them, but I've never actually gotten around to using any of the current model Urbans. They usually write okay but will often have issues that a new fountain pen user won't know how to fix and will just get frustrated with. They also tend to dry out rather quickly if you're not using them everyday, although they're not as bad as the IM models in that regard.

      • Wow thanks for sharing your experience. will hold off for something else, anything you'd recommend on the budget?

        • +1

It's a boring suggestion, but it's hard to go past the Lamy Safari as a relatively cheap pen that has good quality control and no major issues. You'd be looking at $30-40 for the pen and another $10 or less for a converter. But it's a (good quality) plastic pen with a style that won't be to everyone's taste :)

Otherwise if you want a pen from a traditional brand, the Parker Jotter at just under $20 from this deal is probably as good a bet as any. I think they're still made in France too unlike the IM and Urban models. But I'd expect the Safari to be a more reliable pen.

        • Platinum Carbon Desk Pen, Platinum Preppy, Platinum Plaisir (same as the preppy with a metal body). All <$20, with the Preppy being particularly cheap (300 JPY in Japan) although less so in Australia.
