Media Player question

Hey Guys

Can anyone in the know tell me whether buying a blu-ray player with built in WIFI essentially does the same job as a Media player in terms of capability?

  • Need more info, do you have a link?

The Wifi is more likely for downloading blu-ray content, or extra features like internet / you-tube streaming.

Look for a USB port, and things like AVI, DIVX, MKV support.

  • The answer is no.

Media players that have MKV support will tempt some people into buying them. Most of them will give up and buy a highly supported/high quality media player such as the WDTV or just setup a HTPC instead.

The WDTV does the job very well and very reliably with excellent codec support. Not particularly customisable, it just gets the job done. Otherwise setup a HTPC with XBMC. An elegant option is to use something like the acer aspire revo with XBMC on it.

  • Was looking at this deal with the $30 off.

What is the bonus to having a media player? Sorry if my lack of tech knowhow is evident. Cheers

    • The advantage is that you can watch downloaded material..

That Samsung player has media player functionality, but, you wont be able to stream media from your computer.. you'll need to plug in a USB drive.

From the DSE website specs tab:

      Video Decoding Formats: MPEG2/4 / DIVX (including XVID) / DIVX HD / AVCHD / MKV / WMV(1/2/3/7/9) / JPEG / HD JPEG

    • I will add that with the Samy you'll also have access to:
      1) Playing 3D br (with a 3d tv), and region-free dvd
      2) internet@tv (or whatever it's called)

I've got both the Samy 3d setup and a wdtv and whilst neither has a huge range of apps/widgets yet the Samy certainly has more.

  • Thanks all for your input. Appreciated.
