Sim Hopping - Qualifying as a New User

Hi everyone,

I recently jumped onboard the sim hopping bandwagon (thanks OzBargain!) with Catch Connect's 90 day prepaid plan. I'll be moving to Kogan's 90 day plan next and will most likely bounce between these two deals unless better values ones pop up.

Just wanted to clarify, when I move to Kogan and then back to Catch Connect after 90 days, do I need to sign up with a new email to qualify as a new user? Or is it simply a matter of having been away from Catch Connect that I'll have fallen off their system and can sign up again with my primary email?

Thanks in advance.

I have done the same thing in the past, I think new services qualify as a new user, not sure if they will clamp down on this. The most annoying this nowadays is the length of time porting, this can be variable. If everything goes well, you can be ported within the hour, if not, it can take days. The last time I ported into Kogan, it took a week, so be prepared for that. Catch Connect can be problematic sometimes as well.

The only way to get around this is to use a dual sim phone, and port your number into $5/month Dodo plan, and then use Kogan/CC for data only. So when your 90 days is up, just activate your "new" service and use it for data for 90 days.

      This is an excellent idea.

      • at that point you've sunk $60 into the dodo plan, when the kogan and catch are $60 as well if you rotate.

      • Or Boost $135/yr option. Telstra coverage for voice and 80gb of data, supplemented with 90 day new service SIM for data :)

    • Or you can get a free telstra sim online and port it to that if you have trouble porting from any of the shifty providers !Catch Connect!.

Had a massive problem with catch connect. trying to port out to boost but it was taking forever and support was useless. Telstra did it in 1 hour…

Just have to be gone for a month

  • For Big TelCo, it doesn't matter how long you have left
    As long as it's a different brand name, e.g. Telstra —>Woolworth's —>Telstra
For smaller ones some require 30days, some 3 months for promotional offer, just read the T&C

But are you sure you want to go back to Catch?
I find Catch is the worst and slowest
I got no internet reception in the middle of a shopping center, on a sofa outside the front door of Coles
    I will never go back

    • That's good to know. I had no issues with CC and currently with Kogan and haven't noticed much of a difference in the service. It's too good a deal with CC so I'll be going back when my Kogan plan ends.
