  • Risk is a very very good game - can be long - but good

    • I know this game is popular. I just fail to see how or why. So much dice rolling for so long…

      • +2

Because it's a very well balanced game that leans heavily on the strategy and less on the luck. Also keep in mind this came out in 1957, when there was nothing around in terms of Real Time Strategy - this was AoE/WC before they were even dreamed of.

        • Indeed it is - i have come back from only having three countries to winning the game.

        • +1

          A well balanced game

          ROFL

          All comes down to dice.

If you want a proper strategy game, get Stratego.

          • @aussietivoman: While it does come down to dice, I think that there is enough rolls in the game that the effect of a single roll is watered down significantly - especially towards the end. A slice of luck is what keeps board games interesting, a big strategy element comes down to how you react to the luck. It's no Monopoly…

        • It's been well and truly superseded in the board gaming world by any one of these strategy games, which introduce a lot more planning, cooperation, choice and balancing and remove random luck.

Like you said, it's from before most people's parents were even born.

That said, I still do like a game of Risk for when I can't be bothered playing something more cerebral and involved.

          • @Gnostikos: You've hit the nail on the head, perhaps accidentally, as to why Risk is such a good game - it gives you the strategy without being too detailed and rule heavy, so you can play it with anyone.

          • @Gnostikos: Yep. I agree. The BGG list of strategy games is far better than Risk. All except that stupid Pandemic game. I feel like I’m in a constant state of panic!

      • +2

It's nicely balanced because the more you extend yourself, the easier it is for someone to punch back. Also, it strongly promotes the formation of alliances between players followed by bitter, bitter betrayals.

But it does ruin friendships/relationships. I have had a Risk board thrown at me before.

      • There’s an app for that.

  • I can't seem to find it at that price even on the US site, as it couldn't be delivered to AUS?

    • have you got prime??

      • Not yet, so if I sign up for the prime trial, the US listing will then be deliverable to AU?
I thought prime just affected the international shipping cost, not whether it could or couldn't be shipped here…..

        • you might be right

I could get to the checkout now option and have it delivered to adelaide

        • +1

You have to be on the amazon.com.au site, not the USA site.

The 60th anniversary edition also has a good price, normally it was $60.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Risk-60th-Anniversary-Strategic-Co…

    • I picked one of these up. ~$11 cheaper than when it was a Black Friday deal too!

    • It looks exactly the same as the regular version, except the board and cards are dark mode instead of light mode? What aren’t I seeing here.

  • +2

I need to buy some more board games for my market stall. Not going to take a chance on this, seems iffy.

    • +2

It’s legit, sold by Amazon US.

      • +8

I think he was meaning it could be risky.

    • I would be very trusting of anything sold by Amazon - and if there is any issues they would probably refund you and not ask for return shipping.

    • Compared to the edition with cardboard arrow pieces instead of plastic soldiers, you could charge loads for this. I’ve never seen the plastic version in Aussie brick and mortar stores.

  • Seems an excellent price given the number of pieces in the game.

  • +4

I’m not beaten yet. I still have armies in the Ukraine!

    • +4

The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble!

    • What is risk? How do you define risk? And why is it so risky?

  • Back to $39. :(
