http://handbrake.fr/ (More granular control on output formats.)

  • Format Factory is almost certainly the best and it is free.

    Converts virtually anything to anything.

    no virus mate?

    • ^^ Wins the obscure post of the week award

      …And your point is? :-?

      • i just want make sure those site doesn't contains virus.

        • You could always try Handbrake mentioned by scrimshaw. It's open sourced so I think it's less likely to contain spyware/adware/virus.

        • Virus? LOL… don't you use AV on your machine?

However - Format Factory DOES try to install Google Toolbar, so make sure to untick that option during the install process.

        • av? i don't have one.

        • AV = Antivirus.

If you're not using one now you should at least install a free one on your machine.

This is a Link to a license key which converts Avast into the Premium license. Lasts until April 2012.

        • i bought that item from mystery item from cotd before, but i haven't installed that program yet.

  • Depends if you want to convert to MPEG1 or MPEG2 (DVD) or MPEG4

TMPGEnc PLUS does free MPEG1 encoding, and allows for a good range of settings if you know what you're doing.

The key for getting better quality output videos is to make sure you have a high enough video bitrate, on the downside it means your files will be bigger.

What input format are you planning to use?

  • If you want to get your hands dirty (use command line), ffmpeg is the best. Free software (LGPL/GPL).

    • Actually many of the programs mentioned in this topic are using ffmpeg as backend.

  • is there any that will run on macs?
