Kogan Robot Vacuum Cleaner - Issue with Dark Carpet

Hi,

I got this unit recently for testing if it works. I have tiles and carpet and while it does a decent job for the tiles, it just does not work on the carpet. The reason is that the carpet is in a dark color.

I raised these issues with Kogan and they responded that it's mentioned on their website. Its mentioned as a footnote, which I think is not acceptable.

My question is does anyone have a similar issue and what was your fix?

Thanks,
G

Please Note: This device is not suitable for long plush carpets and/or dark surfaces.

    • Yes, I have seen that after the rep pointed it. My complain it should have been in bold RED so people can read and not get fooled.

Anyways I want to also know if someone else has run with this issue.

      Thanks,
      G

      • when did you buy it? perhaps search the cache/archive version for the page.

good luck with your future endeavor

      • I think yellow or green would be more visually appealing.

Not only in red bold, but surrounded by flashing gifs and annoying sounds.

I think your vacuum is racist.

  • What is the issue with dark carpets?

    • +1

Infra red light not reflecting strong/bright enough on dark carpets, thus fooling the sensor picking up dark carpet as obstacles

Cliff sensors shine light (probably IR) down and expect to see a reflection, to prevent the vacuum falling down the stairs or off the balcony, dark carpets do not reflect and therefore the vacuum will not work on dark carpets.
This will be a problem for any robot vacuum.

Assuming you have no stairs OP, an easy solution to the problem might be to tape some white paper over the sensors so they get a continuous reflection and therefore no more issues with your dark carpets.

    • Thanks for your responses. I take it this is then an inherent problem with "robot" vacuums or do other makes/models not have this problem?

no problem on robot with laser sensor

        • Ah, OK. Thanks. Just starting to have a look at some of these products.

        • The laser sensor is used for room/obstruction navigation, not cliff sensing.
Any robovac with Cliff sensors will have the same issue.
          And that's all of them.

(as far as I am aware)

The universal solutions are to either disable the sensors entirely or trick them as suggested above.
