Great for visitors who have NFC capable Android phones; $7 for a Myki sucks (Perth is worse with their $10 SmartRider)

    • I think you have to initially put $10 into Mobile myki
but I am not sure how easy it is to claim the unused amount back

Yes but you get $10 credit back, vs paying $7 just for the card with zero credit.

I was surprised by QLD and their Go Cards. It was a $10 deposit which I got back as long as I didn't top up at a station, and when I returned the card I even got the balance of the card given to me in cash + the $10.
I certainly was expecting to lose the balance to the rail gods.

Maybe QLD is just more tourist friendly.

  • I'm a pretty casual PT user in Melbourne, I take PT about once every two weeks. Been absolutely seamless for me so far. Taps on really fast every time, and it's one less card to carry now.

    AUD$2B++ for this myki system.

For that price, the app should be paying me to take public transport.

Works well enough, instant top ups &
    Quick taps in/out the gates

The other day, I depleted my mobile myki balance to negative, and because there's no card creation fee unlike the physical card, I just deleted the card. Create another one. No need to pay back the negative balance

Convenient, but really depends on the scanner.
Some scanners seem to require more than a few seconds to scan, very annoying during peak hours.

In my area they updated the scanner its much faster now just depends on how i place the phone on the scanner

      • The Flinders St Station ones seem to scan as fast as a normal card.
But with other scanners, I have to hold my phone perfectly still in front of the scanner for maybe 3 seconds.

    • This. I catch the bus, and the ones with the new scanners are almost instantaneous. The earlier model scanners require you to have a very steady hand for 5 seconds which is frustrating.

  • As an occasional visitor to Melbourne, it's pretty convenient.
Similarly NSW allowing a contactless card to be used directly is pretty neat.
Now if we could just do SOMETHING more modern in SA, hate having to carry a dedicated card for PT…

  • Just went down as a tourist a couple of weeks ago, made life so easy, bought a weekly pass and added it to my google wallet, no issues at all in getting around the city on the trams

  • I think it works well. I don't use pt often and I much prefer it to using a card.
The best part is the recharging. I don't use pt often so I only load on what I need.
