For shedding I have found the only way is to brush the cats regularly, you need to brush quite hard.

Every time you see them scratch the furniture yell at them, and if you can, move them to the post. Make a big fuss and reward when you see them scratching the post. You may need a few posts close to the furniture to start with. My cat has stopped scratching the furniture now.

I brush my medium haired cat to get the excess fur off, but it seems he grows it back as fast as I’m brushing it.
Seriously five minutes of brushing and I have enough hair to make another cat.

Hahahahaha good luck. As a fellow cat owner I have no advice. Cats will cat.

A good brushing every week in the molting seasons is the best remedy.

A spray bottle filled with water is one option that works for some cats.

I just had a tiny spray bottle and sprayed my cat every time, she's still under a year old so has learnt very quickly not to scratch anymore.
Also provide some scratching posts and try redirect them onto that.
Havent been able to stop them from stretching and digging into the carpet though.

You just need to brush them as often as you can, we use a regular brush daily, Furmigator every 1-2 weeks.

    As for your sofa, RIP.

Get cardboard scratching boards and watch your cats rip them to shreds. Cats love them.

I manage it by not having cats. Works a treat.

  • Dont be naive: You don't manage scratching and shedding.
Your cats manage their own scratching and shedding.

    Scratching
When they’re scratching your furniture they’re scent marking - relocate them to where they are allowed to scratch.
We’ve found the ideal cat tree has a lower section with a large sisal covered post so our cats can scratch at a full arched back (minimum height would be the height they are scratching the verticals of your couch).
Play with them on their trees, encourage scratching by running something like a piece of dowel/ fishing rod toy etc up the post.
Your cat trees need to be where the family congregates - having a tree in a disused room isn’t appealing better by the couch/tv and another by your work/computer desk.

    Shedding
It’s going to happen, either you brush it out into your brush or it’ll go everywhere.
Not all brushes are created equal and not all cats have the same coat.
An actual de shedding brush is a game changer if your not using one.
Year round we brush every 1-2 weeks with a soft brush for routine and bonding.
Moulting season furminator 5 minutes 2-3 times a week followed by a soft brush
You don’t need to brush hard or rough just regular. It should be enjoyable for the cat.

-owned by two cats, leather furniture without holes (cant say the same for some shirts) and our house isn’t covered in fur

The best hair brush is the furminator, you can pick them up on ebay for about $20. Just need to do it daily during molting season. Dont have to brush hard, just normal and they dont mind….. I have 2 ragdolls so pleanty of fur around…..

With scratching posts, spray them with catnip to make them more popular every couple of weeks…..
