  • This post is giving me deal processing disorder. Can 324 dollar buds from a brand I have never heard of be a good deal?

So there might be a better way of phrasing this without invoking disorders. Even though you were joking, people with audio processing disorders benefit hugely from these devices. They're not advertised as a product that's similar to a Sony or a bose; they're acting as a device that is in many cases restorative of hearing function and the ability to make sense of the world.
We might not remember the intense pain of having blocked ears as a child. We might not know what it's like to hear high pitched ringing everytime we try to sleep. This means that for us, we can take things for granted. But when you're in pain or you've lost part of your functioning, to have access to devices like this that help make the world and your life better is life changing.
Do I know the company? No. Don't know the poster. I don't even think you were being mean. But we can all be more sensitive when products and problems are discussed.
      Peace. And noise. Depending :)

Thank you so much for saying this. And these are a specialist device, you can use them as earphones, but their main function is more like a hearing aid. It's a product advertised through therapists and hearing specialists because that's how their target audience is going to be reached.

        • No probs :) I hope they help you. And peace for you too :)

It was certainly not my intention to be mean. Funny maybe :)

They look like Bluetooth earphones to me, what is audio processing disorder and how do they work to resolve it? Or is APD something that is an umbrella term for all sorts of different auditory issues?

        • +1

It's all good. At least for me :)
Apd is both one thing and lots. Specifically and mostly it's when your brain has difficulty distinguishing sounds from each other - someone talks and it can seem like they're speaking nonsense because of internal interference (the Apd part) or external - crowd noise, chatter, music in supermarkets etc. This site explains more - https://www.webmd.com/brain/auditory-processing-disorder
My guess is that people living with it, especially from childhood, get treated like they're stupid or rude because they can talk usually without any problems, but receiving information aurally requires incredible attention etc. I suspect as a kid it'd be frustrating so you'd act out, or you'd literally switch off - the energy required to make sense of just everyday stuff would be enormous.
From what I could tell these things are a cross between Bluetooth buds and hearing aids in that they act in certain ways to help you focus on the right kind of noise. For example, my mum has hearing aids but hates wearing them at restaurants because they amplify every sound. So she'll sit there and not be able to hear conversations because it's preferable to the hearing aids. My guess is that these allow people to noise cancel (I only had a quick look so caveats apply), noise focus, and connect better with devices to hear higher frequency sounds (which often go first if there's hearing loss involved.). It's possible OP might be able to tell us more.
And definitely meant what I said about peace :) especially on the internet my words can come across wrong or preachy and in this case wasn't trying to do that. I got to learn something about these new devices by investigating - for me, I have chronically sensitive hearing, do high pitch notes and deep bass can be physically painful and completely distract me, so I'm always on the look for how to help me chill a bit :)
Hope this time of year is a good one for you :)

          • @TheRealCher: I will probably need something like this eventually, too many concerts has me struggling to understand what people are saying in noisy bars. Not sure if I am worse than others or it's just bothers me more, but for that reason I prefer quieter bars these days. Good to know someone is working on this type of thing, hopefully it will be perfected by the time I need it.

This time of year is always good for some bargains, can't go wrong :)

@TheRealCher: You basically summed up what I want them for, if I'm in a noisy environment, for example a restaurant, I basically just hear everything at the same volume and can't really follow what someone is saying unless they're right next to me and I focus solely on them. I also have a lot of trouble with deep bass being physically uncomfortable, so doing anything in a noisy environment just wears me out really quickly.

            • @Frostysaurus: You have my genuine sympathy and empathy. The whole thing must be exhausting.

  • Be careful purchasing these.
I purchased some recently and had a fair few problems including the ear tips coming off and getting stuck in my ears. Their noise cancelling and boost functions didn't work properly. The world sounds mode only worked at minimum volume. The bluetooth didn't stay connected and sound broke up even with the phone on the table right in front of me. Often they wouldn't turn on when placed in my ears, and when placed in the case they kept coming on and making a screeching sound.
I got on to Nuheara and they said they thought the buds were faulty and to return them and that they would send out replacements when they received them. Sounded like good customer service. However when I returned them I just got a cryptic response they had received them. Three weeks later (yesterday) no replacements so I sent an email. Today I get an email saying they were refunding my money but charging a restocking fee of $24! I only sent them back because they told me they were faulty, and was expecting replacements. Instead I am $24 poorer.
Perhaps these do actually work and I got a lemon set. But I'll never know because Nuheara's customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I think I now know why they have been discounting these so heavily lately.

    • If you can, I would send a letter to the manager with a copy of the accc's PDF on concumer rights. "restocking" fees are against the law if the product is faulty/not fit for purpose.
And sorry that yr experience sucked. When yr hoping for something that can really help, this situation is a big disappointment
