Google Play Netflix Subscription Cancelled?

Hi all.

Have had nextflix for awhile since i signed up via google awhile back. I was on monthly recurring and paid via grocery discounted gift cards on play store credit.

Suddenly ive gotten this email that my netflix will be cancelled. Is this a glitch?or is there a netflix or google play wiemde issue??

Nothing has changed as per other months, the netflix usually just takes money out of the google play balance and auto renews. Is there anyway around this or to resolve as i have a good 150 on google play and dont use it for anything else…

I have no other emails notifying me they'd be looking to cancel it either. What happened??0 communication. Anyone with some idea why?

Email noticication i received:

"Your Netflix subscription from Netflix Inc. on Google Play will be canceled on Dec 14, 2019. No refunds will be issued (Refund Policy).
Order number: xxxxxxx
Order date: Apr 15, 2019 11:42:06 PM EDT

  • We no longer support iTunes as a method of payment for new members. Existing members who currently use iTunes as a method of payment can continue to do so.

Doesn't exactly say on the Australian site, but I'd say it's the same for Google Play.

Google Play is no longer a supported payment method. To continue your membership without interruption, update your payment method on netflix.com/youraccount.

    • Ahhh i just find it odd as i was googling last night and didnt see widespread articles about it or anything. Abit annoying that the first instance i hear of it is via an email saying they were cancelling it today. Not much notice and i wouldnt be buying those discounted google play vouchers otherwise!

  • Some discussion here towards the bottom of the thread. Netflix will be sending multiple e-mails to you over the next month …

    • What's the point of the netflix ones over next few months if google play have told me their cancelling it today (the day before)? Seems a moot point of communication?

      • To scare you into changing your billing method before it gets cancelled? I had to wait for it to be cancelled anyway so I could apply a Netflix gift card to my account.

        • Previously because I was signed up to netflix originally through google play I wasn't able to add the gift card for netflix to take advantage ofthe specials… hence why I went with google play. So now we can buy the netflix specific gift cards and load them as a payment method?

Just a bit sucky that now users who stockpiled on google play credit are essentially shafted.

          • @SaberX:

So now we can buy the netflix specific gift cards and load them as a payment method?

Yes, once your Google Play subscription gets cancelled. Currently using a $50 Netflix gift card to cover me until March.

I also stockpile on Google Play credit, but I also play Pokémon Go and have a Dropbox subscription

  • It wont be canceled it will be suspended prompting you to add a new payment method, I'm assuming they are moving away from the app stores as they google / apple would get a cut of the monthly subscription

    • Well the google play subscription says cancelled for today. Less than a day's notice. Netflix is still working currently but i presume tomorrow it'll shut off and require a new payment method?

Sucks that they've cut out google and apple just like that.

      • They don't just cancel it. They give a month's notice. The first e-mail came from Netflix.

      • Been paying Netflix with GP for a good couple of years. Got bamboozled on one day's notice out of the blue. Account is currently suspended until I enter a CC or a GC voucher. Been to all the Coles in Melb CBD looking for the Netflix $50 GC with the 2k FB but cannot find any. Will try out Woolies with the crappier 1k WW pts

        • There isn't any 2000 flybuys points with any Netflix gift cards at the moment? Or Woolies with 1000 points.

          • @kerfuffle: oof. You're right. Still stuck on last week promos :P Woolies, it is!

edit. Not woolies. Sorry, Big W has the 1k pts

        • So big w are doing netflix special vouchers currently? Can you load these on for those that signed up via GP previously and where we couldn't substitute a netflix gift card (so missed out oon all the promos) given now the google play is gone?

I still find it abit shoddy at the low notice.

  • Is this a glitch?

You you try signing up again via the google play billing?

    • +2

You haven't been able to do that since at least early 2018 in Australia. I had to sign up via Hong Kong in April last year

      • oh well then that answers that then!

I am in a similar boat to you. You seem to be taking better than me. I'm extremely frustrated, I have ~$150 in my Google Play account. I bought the gift cards when they were discounted and mostly use it for Netflix.

I am frustrated at the 7 days notice. Then no option to prepay to use up my current Google Play balance.

I am considering putting a complaint to ACCC.

    • yes, very frustrated too… i have similarly about $150 and I fear a google play card soemwhere in my wallet at the recent $50 specials. Thank god i didn't buy more than $50.

Let me know how you go with the ACCC. I do think the one day's notice is very poor form. I didn't even get 7 days?

      • I got a month's notice …

        • Jeez i sure got shortchanged! emailed the day before. I wouldn't have bought into the recent google play gift card sales at woolies etc. if i knew a month ago.

            • @kerfuffle: strangely i didn't. I did check another email attached to account and i got a recent email in last two or so weeks, but got lost in translation, nothign to my google play account which is where the subscription goes through/gets paid (netflix goes toa bulk account, lots of spam/newletters etc).

Still… a few weeks or even a month isn't 'notice' for anyone with a google play balance paying this off.. which is the disappointing part.

Just got a message midway through watching a show that my membership is on hold and to update payment method to continue watching.
Checked my email and the notification email arrived 20mins before my account was put on hold ! Checked wife's gmail account as payments are under her google account and she got an email this morning but nothing else.

Now to see if i still can keep my $14.99 payment….

    • Keep? Has the price gone up?

      • +1

Not for me, added a netflix gift card resumed watching and my plan details ain't changed…….. Yet.

Still on the Ultra plan @ $14.99

      • It's now $19.99 for the most expensive plan (up from $14.99, then $17.99)

        • My current account after adding the netflix gift card as payment option last night.

@kerfuffle: Strange, did you open it in browser or app?
Works fine for me in browser, I don't use the app.

Did you add your billing details like your credit card or PayPal, or just the Netflix gift card? If the former, let me know if you get more nag e-mails like my comment below?

                • +1

@kerfuffle: Only added netflix card after google payment stopped.

In saying that i only got an email to gmail few hours before and then 20mins before i got cut off another email to a secondary email address.

Have only ever used google play for payments so will see how it goes.

  • I just got another one from Netflix to update my payment method before January 7 ☹️ I'm using a Netflix gift card … I think they want me to attach a credit card or PayPal to it. Yeah, nah …

    • did it work with gift card for the same price?

      • +1

Yeah; I'm still paying $17.99. Others who signed up earlier are still paying $14.99

        • The person I did a live chat with said that I will be moved into a $19.99 once my plan expires and changed to a new payment plan… very confusing..

Did you add the gift card after the plan was totally cancelled or just before?

          • +1

@chen: Added it after it was cancelled. I couldn’t add a gift card until it got cancelled

            • @kerfuffle: Great! Thanks for the tips @kerfuffle :)

  • It seems like those who were on a $14.99 plan had zero notice about their Netflix getting cancelled via Google Play (my friend just received their notice and is also paying $14.99).

  • I just got kicked out of my Netflix $11.99 standard plan, zero notice provided, been paying for Netflix via GP for years.

$162 balance sitting in GP credit that i now have no use for.

Thanks for doing that to me Netflix you arseholes

    • +1

i've refused to update my payment details. there are so many streaming services available now.

what gets me is that i am receiving emails saying "miss us? update your payment details so you can watch your favourite shows again"… if you are going to treat your customers with complete disregard. im not going to miss you.

      • yeah i'll most likely switch over to the $89.99 12 month disney + now

netflix probably didnt like paying a commission to google, well now you're gonna have nothing instead of something you idiots

youre certainly not getting another cent from me

    • Yeah i had $150 and had another $50 google play card in my wallet i bought in November, forgot to load (had bonus points on woolies or something catologue) . Now got $200'ish as well in my google play. Pretty cheesed off that netflix got rid of it without a good grace period. Or at least freezing legacy payment methods.

Not sure if I'll move though, isn't disney and all that alot more kids movies and cartoons? whereas netflix gets more the series and movies that one is more likely to watch? the mrs enjoys the asian content - movies, korean dramas etc. which I don't think non-netflix series get currently?

Are there any streatming series that you can pay for using google play now then?

      • How much were you paying for your Netflix subscription? Seems like those who paid $11.99-$14.99 got zero notice. I got a month's notice and pay $17.99 for mine

        • I upgraded to the top tier one in the last 2 or so months so I think I was previously in that sub $15 band… would have been at $17.99 if so presumably?

I heard something about them now bumpin gup prices? Either way im not loading netflix gift cards on either incase they shaft us again and no longer accept gift card only.

Still salty on how they shafted google play members. after all I never would have signed up originally if not through the google store.

          • @SaberX: I’m currently paying with Netflix gift cards only (they don’t have my credit card details) and I still keep getting nag e-mails to update my billing period. Interesting to see what happens after the 7th …

  • So just got another email tonight saying I have to update my payment method by 16th January to continue receiving the service, yet in my account it says
    "$35.01 Netflix credit
Your account is paid until 27 March 2020."

It says no longer accepting my current payment method of Netflix cards, so if they aren't accepting Netflix cards anymore as payment what the heck can you use them for?

I'm one of the people still on the Premium plan for $14.99/month 4 screens + Ultra HD.

*Spoke to online chat and they have no information regarding Netflix gift cards being no longer accepted as payment method, so will see what happens closer to the 16th.

    • I was in the same boat as you, but mine was the 7th. I think it's just a scare tactic to get you to add a credit card. My Netflix (like you, paid for with Netflix gift cards) is still working as we speak and my account is in credit until late May (paying $17.99/month). Probably will forever get those nag e-mails from Netflix asking to add a credit card (which was about once a week) …

      • +1

I'm just going to see what happens with it.
Have used the left over Google Play credit for Disney+ subscription, which seems to have gone down well with the kids as they've not used Netflix since.

      • hope your right! just got the email too albeit for 17th jan… and i still have credit from my $50 gift card.

    • Same… just got an email albeit for 17th January.

What a rort if it doesn't accept the $30 something left in my gift card for the monthly sub. If so I'll be looking to jump from netflix asap!

      • Well I'm now getting onscreen nag messages that Netflix cards are no longer being accepted as payment method.
        https://ibb.co/g3qcTwX
Wait and see what happens in 2 days time.

        • It's a scare tactic. I was in the same boat. My Netflix paid for with Netflix gift cards still works to this day and they don't have my credit card billing details

          • @kerfuffle: how much are you paying per month?

          • @kerfuffle: Customer service rep reckoned I'm getting the banner message as Netflix detected that i'm accessing the service from NZ !
Told him i'm not using a VPN and I am definitely in WA, so he then goes send all emails with the notification to update payment method to [email protected] LOL.

            • @CheapGit: is there any issues with using a VPN with netflix? I thought of using a paid VPN to access content, but family said this is a known/easily blocked thing by Netflix, so there is no way around location restrictions even when using a VPN?

ON a side note I presume VPN doesn't protect you on public wifi when travelling (as the unsecured part is between laptop to wifi and back, and VPN only then encrypts/routes through from the wifi router onwards portion?)

              • @SaberX: I have couple work mates using a VPN without any problems to watch UK netflix and other UK services.
Probably luck of the draw really.

Never really used public wifi for anything important but I'd imagine better to use the vpn than not, especially over an unsecured public wifi network.

        • Another round of nag e-mails has started up again, for the third month in a row …

          • @kerfuffle: The on screen nag banner has now gone, and so far no more emails regarding updating payment.

            • @CheapGit: Those e-mails will be back unless you gave them your credit card details

  • Dupe.

  • Thanks for this thread. Never got an email and paid for a month on the 27th of December using Google play subscription then Netflix cancelled me on the 14th of Jan so I had to pay again.

They had no payment history and couldn't help. Explained what happened to Google and they nice enough to refund Decembers payment charge though.

  • So Netflix are not accepting Netflix gift cards now? If so that's up there with the dumbest things I've ever heard.

    • Read the comments.

  • +1

Ok, so now just got another notification on screen that my monthly cost is being increased to $19.99 from 20th February. Still currently paying $14.99 for Premium plan using Netflix gift cards. Now for the wait and see if anything happens this time.

    • Every 2 or 3 months i top up another $50 netflix card. they dont allow it in the app so its alway sa computer/login to mobile phone browser to do it. still it allows me to jump ship if they ever get too expensive and we cbb entertaining netflix. I think the day will come when they increase their prices past "chips and change" thresholds and unfortunately they may be too dominant by then to find alternatives.

      • When I lost the payment loophole via Telstra Prepaid then they did away with Google Play payments I went to Netflix gift cards rather than credit card, as at times you can still get 20% discount on these.

Amazon Prime still gives good value for the yearly payment.
Use Disney plus paid using discounted Google Play cards and with the new Disney star starting soon adding extra content.
Using Binge free for 12 months via Telstra, and Tubi app for older stuff it'll be harder to keep Netflix if they keep rising the price.

        • Where do you get 20% off netflix gift cards??

Yeah amazon has some interesting shows but netflix does alot of asian related content (dramas form korean, japan etc) and some more mainstream hits, that are hard to go by…

          • +1

@SaberX: Sorry I got mixed up with Google Play cards ! 🤦

Though you can find now and again $50 cards going for around $40 in the classified section, just gotta be quick.
Or not technically a discount but Woolies sometimes does 2000 points ($10) for purchase of $50;Netflix card, though more often it's only 1000 points ($5).
