Amaysim unable to send longer texts, laggy incoming messages via data?

So I know amaysim is every Tom Dick and Harry's favourite on Ozbargain,so I'm sorry for shitting on it. But just wondering how many of you actually enjoy the service, besides the deals and savings you get?

I've never been with a provider this bad (have been with telstra, boost, Voda, optus, catch, ovo). Some of these are unreliable with internet in some areas, especially the Gps.

However I've never had issues with longer texts not sending (discovered they don't send unless I split into two) and messages via online messaging apps taking a minute or few to come through or send, almost half the time.

Granted i did take advantage of the $5 for 6x 28 day renewals, but a week in and I'm regretting changing providers.

I'm looking at a message that has been sending for 20m right now 😒. Maybe it depends on the area you're in.

      • Do a: https://speedtest.net/ and report your results.

Damn, should've asked this before I ran out of data this month πŸ˜‚. Right now it's the sms that's a problem. I'll test it next month, thanks!

          • @Bargainbeth: Oh ok, haha.

          • @Bargainbeth: Also If your using an iPhone make sure it’s set to SMS and not iMessage.

            • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Ah, I'm not using an iPhone. And if it were on iMessage, the messages wouldn't send at all now that my data is gone.

              • @Bargainbeth: Have you tried contacting support and have you tried their help articles on their website?

                • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Tried the latter, not yet the former. Won't really need to contact them until next month. I'll just have to shorten my sms, and then they go through. Didn't post to trouble shoot, just for the poll really.

Unless someone had the same issues ofcourse.

                  • @Bargainbeth: You might find the longer SMS are sending as MMS instead and thus getting stuck because your out of data??? I am trying to remember what happened back in my Nokia 2100 days πŸ™ˆ

@Australianjim: Wow, you're probably right. I feel silly for half of my question now.

Those were the days right? πŸ˜‚

First time being out of data on a longgg time haha. It seems my last phone allowed me to send longer sms and before it converted to mms. And gave warning when an sms turned into mms, unlike my current one.

Time to stop writing novels πŸ™Š

                      • @Bargainbeth: No, it's not because of no remaining data. I have 10GB per month that I don't use, but I can't send long messages. I tried a few days ago. The phone says it's converting to MMS and then it gets rejected. It's a pain in the neck. I had to send a msg to a third person via whatsapp and ask them to hand their phone over to person #2. It's like being transported a decade into the past. It could be a phone thing too, but I can't be bothered looking into it… i.e. A $29 Samsung phone I bought from Coles years ago used to send large messages as separate messages somehow but combine them at the other end. You could see it counting down: "Message 10 of 10 sent… Message 9 of 10 sent…"

                        • @GregMonarch: Thanks Greg. I experimented again today. My text was 295 characters. Just realised earlier texts were just as long but sent. I took out two emojis and the sms sent without a problem. Perhaps emojis count as lots of characters, which strangely put it over to Mms (didn't happen with this short a text on my last phone.

LOL. Sounds like dial up speeds.

Assuming you can't be bothered inserting the sim in another phone to see if it's just the phone, if you can't send send sms at all is:
Try to check the "Message Centre Number" (or SMSC) has been correctly set to +61411990001 (quick Google search for the instructions specific to your device).

Mine was already set automatically, so it just seems to be a character issue. Plus the extra lag issue with online messaging appd.

  • Haha. Port out. Was cheap anyway

    • Yeah it was cheap, but that's what keeps me wanting to stay on πŸ˜…. Will just call them next month to try and fix the slow data issue. It's hard to leave the circus after jumping through so many hoops to join πŸ˜‚.

  • "So I know amaysim is every Tom Dick and Harry's favourite on Ozbargain"…
Not so much these days… favourite now seems to be Boost, Circles Life or Catch Connect.

    • Oh sorry, looks I'm not up to date with the most current trends then πŸ˜‰.

  • Amaysim (Optus network in general, rather) is hot garbage where I live.

I'm not surprised you have issues. Takes me years to send a text.

But that could be said about any carrier. Depends where you live.

    • Optus for me is fine, but I do hear some people struggle with it. For me, it only gets rubbish when I wander around the cbd and sometimes when train commuting.

Or been on optus, catch and ovo and none have had the laggy data issue at home, nor any sms or call quality issues.

      • Amaysim should be same as Optus…

        Hmm…

        • Oh. Forget to mention. This is a new phone I'm using. But it's a pretty high priced phone, not some random cheap one. And was working absolutely fine when I was on voda.

          • @Bargainbeth: You know, I get better reception on a Nokia 3 than I get on my Nokia 8.

You'd think it was the other way around.
