20% off Optus Mobile Broadband 500GB $68/Month (Month-to-Month)

960

Pretty good deal, only $3 more than the 200GB plan. Month to month contract is a nice sweetener.

Save yourself some $$ and get a modem from 2SG instead of Optus (https://2sgwholesale.com.au/product/huawei-b525-4g-router/).

Enjoy

      • Might still be doing NAT. Do you get a 192.168.x.x IP address?

  • +2

Ordered the B818 from Harvey Norman, $100 gift card included. Given the payout cost of the router is $192, reducing by $8 a month, the gift card means you could cancel after a year, and still have effectively only paid for the service, with the router thrown in for free. And it ain't a cheap router to buy (typically up to 400 USD ordered from Ali Express).

Great deal for those with crappy ADSL or NBN services.

    • +2

Yup, did the same myself. Except in my case I had to wait over an hour on the phone while HN tried to get an Optus rep on to help process the order. For my troubles, the Optus rep seems to have stuffed up my order and applied the discount to the old $80/500GB plan from last year instead. Fingers crossed it sticks, as a Christmas present from Optus to me LOL.

  • HN/plan deal sounds great to me.

So if i got this for my parents as well, could they plug in their home phone to it and somehow keep their 039.. number?

    • +1

No. This is for wireless broadband only and does not support telephone service. You will need a fixed landline or NBN number porting to keep the telephone number.

  • +1

Just signed up for this. And ported my number across since they offered 25% off SIM only plans. So 500GB mobile broadband + 60GB SIM for my phone (both month to month) = $104 / mth. Seems like a good deal.

  • Received it today, now just going through the motions of setup. For some reason, when the SIM was first activated, I was getting over 200mbps (!!!) on the first test, but this has now come back to a paltry 20-50mbps.

Anybody know what's going on? Has Optus put a speed limit on these services as opposed to mobiles?

    • +1

Could be the lte band that the modem is connecting to. I get different speeds when I change my modem band settings. What modem are you using?

      • +1

        B818

Just switched to 4G - 2300 MHz only - back to over 100 down (though up is back to a snail's pace - all good, can tweak back if I need to upload something).

        Thanks for your help.

        • Looks like you got the hang of it!

          • @ballistykx: Cheers - do you know which bands Optus uses in Australia? It seems a waste that a modem capable of receiving so many different bands can only receive 2300 or non-2300.

            • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Use the "AUS phone towers" app to find your nearest tower and it will show you which band has the highest bandwidth.

              • +1

@ballistykx: I've got the Nighthawk M1 modem and you can hack it to aggregate bands, there could be a way to do it with the B818.

        • How do you switch over to just the 4G & not use the 3G?

          • +1

@the Unforgiven: Access the web gui at 192.168.8.1. User:admin, Password:admin. Under Network Settings/Mobile Network Searching, you can choose: Auto, 4G Only, 4G 2300MHz only, 4G only no 2300MHz or 3G only. Huge thread over at Whirlpool: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9p8yvml9

            • @blindferret: Thank you so much for that blindferret,
              I didn't see it; I hate being sober ;)

It looks like I can only get '4G only no 2300MHz',
if I chose any other, even 3G, I cannot connect

              I am 1.12kms from the tower & I get
              down - between 1.8 - nearly 5 (mainly) :(
              up - a constant 5

It doesn't matter if I am 1 foot away or 1 room away from the modem,
which has all 3 lights for signal on

I wish I could get better download speeds
I will get my Optus SIM for my mobile either next week or the week after,
they sent it to a different address to the modem!

              • +1

@the Unforgiven: you can get signal stats from advanced | system | device info. i suppose if you have 3 bars on the front then your signal is fine.

have you tried rebooting the b818? i noticed that occasionally i get low speeds and rebooting fixes.

                • @c64: Thank you mtg for that :)

I have re-booted several times, pulled out the plug a few times,
played around with settings; I even rang tech & they played with it remotely,
she said it was fine, don't use a VPN & 5Mb/s is a good speed for it,
you won't get much better than that (I won't tell you what I thought of that)

                  I used AusPhone & they said the tower is 197Mb/s for 763MHz & 395Mb/s for 2680MHz,
but that is with a Woolies SIM (I am kind of new to mobile as I lived bush for too long with no towers around)
There is this Optus tower in town & there is a 3G Helstra tower in the next town & they won't put 1 in this town for 2 years; then they will tuen off the 3G to get it ready to be re-deployed

I just got 7.7Mb/s - woo hoo, only 7.7Mb/s cries
at least the ping is better than NBN skyMuster satellite & so is the data/month ratio.

I have only ever had dial-up, ISDN & satellite; maybe when these low earth satellites from Elon or that Amazon dude are around I will go back onto satellite, at least the ping is getting down from 1500ms to 580ms (now) & it will be faster still with these low earth satellites.

I am only just over 1 kay from the newish satellite exchange but they won't give me ADSL as this place already had the skyMuster installed when I got the place. oh well, it is only the 19th century so I can't expect too much from this lousy tech - oh wait, it is the 21st century &$*#

Damn the hn deal finished on the 24th

    • Damn :(

    • (printed) catalogue says "Offer ends 31/12/19" - here. Anyone tried?

      • I went there today and they gave me the gift card when I asked for it. Card isn't activated yet though.

They had to ring Optus and raincheck the modem. I have since gotten the notification from Optus that the order is ready to post.

        • How did you get them to honour the eftpos gift card? my local HN said they couldn't physically give me the gift card with B818 modem as it's not on their portal.

          • @Happybird: I just showed them the catalogue and asked for the gift card. The modem wasn't on their portal but it didn't seem to matter getting the gift card.

I think they just activate a gift card manually when the invoice the order in their system.

        • Thought the gift card deal was over?

          • @CereaL: It finishes on the 31st of December according to the catalogue for mobile broadband services

        • I went there today and they gave me the gift card when I asked for it.

My experience too - took catalogue to prove that the deal was on, and said that I'd only buy through them if they honoured the GC as advertised. That convinced them!

          Card isn't activated yet though

Check that they linked the GC to the HN invoice number. My GC should have been able to be activated today, but wasn't. Turned out that the (clown) that served me on Friday hadn't done what he should have. Spoke to store manager who linked it while I was on the phone and it activated immediately. Now I have to endure HN again to spend it…

They had to ring Optus and raincheck the modem. I have since gotten the notification from Optus that the order is ready to post.

Same, but my B818 arrived yesterday. Using it now - much faster than the crappy ADSL in my area :-)

  • Has anyone had issues going over data using 4K/HD streaming services?

  • Is anyone still able to get the HN deal after the 24th of Dec with b818 modem?

    • printed catalogue says "Offer ends 31/12/19" https://www.latestcatalogues.com/harvey-norman/share-the-joy…

its in hard to read writing in the red panel ..

      • yeah i went in but they claimed not to know anything about it

        • just came back from Harvey Norman in Hobart - signed up at 4pm today.
Optus sending out a B818 modem (3-5 business days) and got given a $100 EFTPOS card.

  • +5

i signed up yesterday via harvey norman and received the B818 modem today. i previously had 5Mbps adsl 4km from exchange, about to be forcedly disconnected shortly. i just plonked the modem next to my computer. holy sh*t! my first speed test just now is 19ms ping, 124Mbps down, 36Mbps up. money well spent i think if it stays like this, and a big middle finger to the NBN :)

  • Anyone tried getting the Harvey Norman deal now? How often is it happening ? Likely to happen anytime soon?
