How tech savvy is she? I found it was much better buying my mum an iPad. Never had a minute issue once she moved from windows to the closed system. Can do basic Ms Office.

Other option is a nice Chromebook, one that takes android apps. Works well enough and would mean you wouldn't need to worry about updates.

I'm not a personal fan of underpowered windows laptops.

    • Yup. As much as I prefer Windows and Android for my own personal use, my mum gets an iPad because it's just much closer to being an appliance than a gadget to use.

Get an ipad and upgrade her printer to one that does AirPrint (old people like to print stuff!)

If she likes her current surface then another one is the obvious choice? No learning curve.

yes pretty sure an ipad would do better. my mum cant even use my newly built pc to check bank account/electricity bills. apple products are precisely aimed at tech deficient people.

Mate. You just can't help yourself, can you, Garry? You're drawn to baseless comments about Apple devices like a fly to pig sh1t.

      • amazing, the urge to defend ur object of worship. ur devotion is admirable, if only our soldiers were like u.

btw i didn't neg u, not gonna stoop that low.

        • The last sentence in your original comment demonstrated your inherent need to attempt to insult Apple users by equating their target market to older people whom, much like yourself - don't quite understand technology so they need it dumbed down. My comment was replying to that.

apple products are precisely aimed at tech deficient people.

      Lol. Trolling ?

      • fine, not "precisely aimed" but thats the major chunk of apple's market. their "precise aim" is to make easy to use software that's different from windows and windows applications, so as to suck in people into their ecosystem and make it very hard to leave. for tech deficient people it is true that apple products are better.

I wouldn't bother with a surface for $500, they're not great at that price point and the older ones die quickly in a non-repairable manner. An iPad is great if that meets the requirements or a plain old laptop is ok if a heavy office user. Keep in mind a nicer laptop that is old is generally better than a cheap one that is new (better build quality etc).

  • We didn't know her washing machine packed up a year ago and she has been washing by hand and at laundromats so we bought her a new Haier front loader machine where she lives (Taree), its being delivered today she is over the moon poor old dear, Bing Lee will instal new one take old one away, so now will look for good used laptop in her, it asa feel good day!.
