Avoid Port out Fee (Optus Postpaid to Prepaid another provider)

My mobile was on Optus postpaid plan and I want to switch to prepaid plan from other providers.

I read a post that I can avoid port out fee $8 for switching to prepaid before porting out and also it was mentioned that I need to use prepaid service at least once in Optus.

Currently I switched to prepaid plan(I can see in Optus app) in Optus but haven't recharged yet. and it seems like I don't have to prepaid service as I am already prepaid customer.

Does anyone know if I actually have to use prepaid service in Optus before move on to another provider?

  • You don't have to be prepaid to move your number to another service

  • Has your contract expired or not

    • I am asking port out fee not contract fee

  • How much time, effort, and stress are you prepared to put yourself through to save $8?

$8 for each year and people around me I can help if I know it. and I don't think port out fee $8 is fair. It's a bullshit to make extra money by telcos

Of course it is. But is it a fight worth having?

        • i don't have to fight. just understand system and go that way

For me, its not really worth the hassle to save $8. But I guess yes it can work.

depends on what you value your time as. Mess about for an hour to port over to prepaid, to save $8 isn't worth it for me.

  • Have you read the terms and conditions, or spoken to Optus?
Unless you are exploiting a loophole or breaking the rules the simplest solution is to get the official answer from the company directly (in writing preferably)

    • tnc says they charge it for only postpaid user.
and they wouldn't like what I am doing

I've done exactly that when my Optus contract ended years ago. From what I recall, having to recharge at least once was a requirement.

Why don't you just try to initiate a port to another Telco? If it works, it works. If it doesn't, just recharge once with Optus with either the cheapest plan or one that suits your needs and port when that's up.

The way I see it is that now that your on prepaid, Optus can't get more money out of you unless you recharge & they can't really hold your number hostage.

    • Actually when I switch to prepaid, Optus asked me which plan I am going to use. But after all the switch process finished, they asked me to recharge myself (I thought I have to recharge for a pre-paid plan at the same time but actually it was not)

I'm currently on pre-paid plan, but Optus is holding my money as they charge the bill twice at the first month and then they refund it as an Optus CREDIT which is nonrefundable according to Optus Live Chat (this is another stupid system though)

So they may charge me port out fee for not using their pre-paid plan.

It is better to ask if somebody has done it already. :D thanks for your reply
