Neighbour asbestos removal and demolition, demolition stopped halfway

Hello, so basically my neighbours are doing a house demolition and there is there is asbestos in the panels and stuff. After a day, the council tells the company to stop because they didn't have council approval. Now the house is basically half naked with the innards showing and I am concerned because I don't want to cop that mouthful of asbestos. I was thinking to spraying my own water over the fence to minimize risk because I am paranoid and the house is unoccupied. Please provide some advice. Cheers.

Ask the council. Best to not go near the fence and leave windows that side closed all times.

Thats dangerous. Yea ask council stat, though its Christmas time….

Urine acts as a strong supressant to asbestos fibres.

Your taking the piss, aren’t you?

  • Some options depending how much you want to minimize your risk to asbestosis. Though its low, you still have risk.

Friable asbestos = serious issue . Contact your nearest Safe Work.
Council will have Rangers and skeleton crew available for advice.
Also Public Health/Environmental Health units at state level can be helpful.
If it looks like friable and its going to be windy, You could use neighbour's water to keep wet and install sprinkler. However, risk of electrical hazard and other unidentified issues.
Play long shot, move out go on longterm Air BNB and charge to neighbor. Request environmental report to deem safe.
Send them invoice for your costs.
Request health screening and costs for clean up, as it don't look like raining this side of easter.

They have failed in their duty of care, who was PCBU?

I would be seriously annoyed neighbour risked my health due to lack of care

The neighbour engaged a asbestos removal company to do the work. So no lack of care at all. These companies work with it all the time, and use all the right protections for them and you.

Ok, I missed the Op statement that a registered asbestos company had been engaged. i thought they just had a demo company, which does nor imply any safe work practices are being engaged regarding asbestos/ACM removal

Most businesses do not give a toss about human life and will readily sacrifice it to improve profits. I can't believe people are still in this drone like state after watching James Hardy (creator of the problem in this post), Phillip Morris, Volkswagon, Shell and hundreds of others happily killing millions people to make more money.

        • Most businesses do not give a toss about human life

I'm pretty sure the workers doing the work do care about their own life.

Next door had a asbestos roof removed, it was done by workers wearing all the right protective gear and doing all the right things.

How do you make money Diji1? You're either a company that doesn't give a toss about life or working for a company that does, as you seem to think all companies are 'bad'.

    • thanks for the tips, i contacted the council but they sent me to safework and when i contact safework they send me to the council. are there any other avenues such as EPA or 3rd party? thanks

      • also, friable means powdered form right? and non-friable is a solid?

  • I don't want to cop that mouthful of asbestos.

The ACM is non-friable and safe as long as you don't try and eat it.

    • +1

It’s actually safer to eat than to leave lying around. Keeps the fibres moist and away from your lungs.

The ACM may bond which faecal matter once it reaches the colon, but it may cause internal blood or other forms of cancers. Eating a mouthful of ACM is not recommended in any situation.

        • Sorry guys. I had a late night last night.

the council tells the company to stop because they didn't have council approval

Bet you wish you didn't complain to the council now! Should have left them to, all that asbestos would have been removed by now.

    • nah, other neighbours got pissed, i myself had no idea lol

  • I heard a similar situation where the non emergency number for fire was called they came out and said it was x hazardous reported it to x people and needed to be remedied asap. Not sure of the process but may be worth a call.

  • Best to burn down the neighbour's house

    • +2

But asbestos is a fire retardant…

      • Burning the building may trigger an emergency that should force the council to approve an immediate ACM removal.

Ring the council and worksafe and complain about exposed asbestos

Depending on the nature of the asbestos in it and level of demo it may be fairly low risk anyway.

Who did the demo? An asbestos removal company should not have left it in a dangerous condition, they may have sealed any exposed asbestos.

    • not really sure, they had all the equipment and procedures but i guess it wasnt approved by the council

      • They probably didn't have removal work notification.
