Fit is largely a perception of the mind.

    • that's interesting - could you please elaborate. for example i hear people say that an ill-fitting suit makes someone look 'frumpy' or 'unkempt' and i think i can see what they mean

      • +1

That is exactly what perception is.
If you think about it, as an example, what once was an okay fitting suit is now an ill fitting suit due to fashion.
You wouldn't see people wearing the large suits back in the 70s/80s today but back then they were the fit.
        Fashion is all about perception.

        • interesting, i think i see what you mean - thank you!

Clothes are just unnatural, pushed on us by the establishment and liblab. If you voted greens you wouldn't have to be oppressed by them.

  • Clothing sizes don't vary that much by brand, at least in my experience with mens clothing, so not sure why anyone would really have trouble. Yes there's always that oddball brand that has sizing that's way off but most of the time a Large in one brand is a Large in another brand. Double check the size guide and check any review comments and I've only been caught out once and 90% of my clothing is bought online and I have way too many clothes.

      They do vary by brand.

For example, Nautica pants size 34 fit me, but for other brands (like Politix) I would need at least size 38.

This is common with brands that use cheap die cut production. The stack of fabric compresses resulting in a different cut top to bottom of the stack. For quality brands there shouldn't be a 4"/~100mm difference.

I am female and sizing varies wildly from store to store, I am anything from an 8 to a 12, small to medium. For this reason, I. Only buy in store or places that have a very easy returns policy.

I buy from stores that list their measurements

There is no magic bullet for this.

Usually, the larger stores (like Iconic) are pretty good with exchanging items for store credit, so you can buy it again with your correct size. But, it is a hassle to return it & then wait for the refund & then hope the correct size is in stock & then wait for the new item to be sent out to you.

    • such a hassle.
i have tried the buy several sizes and return all but one thing several times, but that it also a hassle in other ways, like having to outlay a huge amount, and the item costing more in the end if you have to pay return postage.

  • Shirts/jackets/tops etc are easy peasy, either you have your own measurements to use with their guide, or it's a basic S/M/L situation where it should be obvious. I've never had trouble with buying footwear online either. I simply don't buy pants/shorts online, that's where it gets tough and unpredictable, damn these thicc thighs and glutes.

    • i think my whole body is like your legs. i find tops nearly as hard and shoes are a nightmare.

Buy from sites where they list the model's measurements and you can compare to yourself. Also shop on sites with easy returns policies like ASOS, The Iconic, Myer etc

I used to prefer shopping online because I hated physical shops and malls. I found it to be a waste of time as I’d be out for hours and buy one thing. Whereas online I could buy the first 10 things I liked in a few sizes and just try it on at home and it would take all of 20 minutes total.

But then… I found out that many online stores just throw all returns into landfill because it’s cheaper and easier than quality checking and repackaging to resell.

Now I won’t ever buy online unless they have a physical shop for me to return to.

WOW!!! where did you learn this? thank you for telling me! but they don't do that instore right?

Not 100% how bad it is in store. Some may do this, you can never be certain. The stuff I’ve read indicates that it’s mostly those that are purely online line amazon or ASOS.

This is the first place I read it but there are other articles/sites that explain it too:

@bargain huntress: No worries! I only discovered this a few weeks ago so I’m still a bit in shock by it all. If an online store assured me they don’t do this I’d still shop there, but until then I’m just going to avoid them.

Best option if you are unsure about sizing is to get the 2 closest to what you expect to wear, in my case usually 18 or 20 currently, so I get both. And it helps if there is a local shop you can return things to, also free return shipping is the bomb!!!
