Best notebook to move away from Apple Mac

hi, I've been a mac user for over 15 years. I have an old mac air that's about to die, its slow and nothing works. Don't want to spend 2k on a new one as I barley use it , i work from home once a week so need a PC. I also have my daughter starting school next year. what's the best affordable laptop, notebook, ultrabook to move away from the Apple ecosystem?
thanks

How long is a piece of string?

Elaborate further as to what you plan to be doing with it? That way we can find the best one for your needs.

    • the only thing i use it for is to work from home once a week logging in using citrix and basic work docs, that's it. everything else i use my phone/ipad. Not sure how much my daughter is going to need it next year in kindy

      • Does the school recommend or prefer a particular device?

Nobody here knows what work you do, so "basic work docs" is entirely meaningless - they could be MS office, coding, music, video, CAD, quantum mechanics, MRIs…. literally anything.

        • sorry that was supposed to be word docs. for work i just log in using citrix and use everything i need for work is through that. Looking for a cheaper option than investing in an apple since all i do is log in once a week. the other thing i use it for is to convert ebooks via calibre , have a large ebook library which i then transfer to my kindle. Doesn't look like a lot of the mobile OS support calibre.

      • You have described the reason why Chromebooks exist. The Acer C434 is very good. Citrix supports Citrix Workspace via Chrome. These machines need almost no software maintenance effort and are extremely secure. Windows is still pretty high maintenance, with very intrusive updates.
Edit: calibre on Chromebook will need you to install the Linux version. This could mean some fiddling. Calibre originates on Linux, and Chrome OS now runs Linux apps officially, so it should be ok.

I buy my Chromebooks from B&H, usually cheaper than Aus and with much better selection.

Just get a another apple and use it for another 15 years.

    • Why? Cheaper not to do that.

    • was hoping for a cheaper option since i only use it once a week for 5 hours

      • Get something second hand

  • Go on the dell outlet and just get a dell latitude 14.

    • thanks will look into it
