75yr Old Mum's Desktop Died Yesterday, Is Lenovo IdeaPad S145 for $799 Good Value?

hi everyone ,

I need to replace mums old desktop so thought probably easier to get a laptop to plug into current monitor and give
her some portability as well . Due to age she is just looking at emails, facebook , playing older peoples games general
banking etc etc .
Do you think this would be good value for her with her needs for that cost

or save some $$ and go for the cheaper one ?

my son is on holiday who I normally bug about this kind of stuff so need some help from my fellow ozbargainers please

  • You sure the computer can't be fixed cheaply?

Both of those laptops will do what she needs it to do. Get the cheaper if that's what you want.

    • desktop is probably 9yrs old and when I used it 3months ago it was horrendous to use , soooo slow . Was working
on the basis that it might cost $200-$300 to bring it back up to speed and fix whatever is wrong with it so might be
worth biting the bullet and getting something new . thanks for you feedback

Yeah if it is that old, parts will be hard to come by, and probably not worth fixing.

That $599 laptop is a good deal. It has all the necessary requirements. i5, 8GB Ram, SSD. It will do fine.

I, suspect, a lot of the issues could be fixed by restoring it to default. However, you risk losing stuff she has put “somewhere”. I agree with getting her a pretty standard laptop.

  • I wouldn’t spend that much. Something like this should easily suffice for $449 for much the same result. Almost anything in 2019 with an SSD (as below is) will be faster than a 2010 PC.

That laptop will not even come close to competing with the $599 Lenovo. A crappy dual core CPU (I love AMD, but only from Ryzen up), and only 4GB of RAM with Windows 10 is a definite no-no. Though the screen is a better resolution, I doubt a 75yo lady will notice the difference.

My mums laptop died a few years back and I got her the slowest celeron with a mechanical drive and she still thought it was too fast for her. So you really can spend the minimum and have her be happy.

  • maybe something secondhand and do a fresh OS install?

  • thanks everyone , got the $599 lenovo , she wont know herself with the new speed !

  • playing older peoples games

    Genuine curious question………what games?

In my Mums case it was Solitaire, Tetris, etc.

there is a gem game she plays and the other 2 mentioned too , I am sure others …

  • Have you thought about getting her a tablet, instead? She might get more use out of it, it will be lighter, games are cheaper/free and it might be cheaper. She can tuck it in her bag and take it with her when she travels. In a pinch she can take photos with it on a nice big display. Nowadays I only use a PC when I want to do some serious typing.

    • actually no , might run that past her , lenovo on order to be delivered so can still cancel. thanks

      • they probably won't let you cancel now and they'll want a 20% restocking fee if you change your mind.

75 year old for a laptop? Due for an upgrade anyway.
