Google Home Mini not allowing to ask to play music

Hi all,

Currently have Lenovo 6" smart screen which works well and allows all the family to ask it to play specific music titles from Spotify no issues. Bought a Google Home mini for Christmas but for the life of me i cannot get it to allow me to ask for specific songs or artists. If i ask it to play a artist it will play a playlist based around that artist(songs that the artist might like it seems as it doesnt play their tracks), and if i ask it to play a specific artist and track it tells me i need a Spotify Premium account. I originally thought it my have had something to do with me having 2 devices, but i even tried setting up my wife with a spotify account and linking that to no avail and even resetting the mini and setting it up clean under her details, same issue.

Can any one advise why this is happening? Oddly i can cast music from Spotify from any mobile on the network, just cant ask the mini to do it. Any ideas? Kind of pointless if i cant ask it to play specific tracks.

  • Have you linked your Spotify premium account?

Home app / settings / music

    • does it have to be Premium? if so, need to pay, right?

      • Form the top of my head you can use free Spotify but you can't play specific songs and there are ads obviously.

      • Yes.

Playing without it would it won't play a particular song, just starts playing a randomly-generated playlist related to the artist.

        • Yes; it will say this "choosing songs is only available to premium subscribers".

  • You have to go to your Google account settings and turn the web/app activity controls on.

  • +1

set your default music provider and make sure Spotify as set as the preferred one.

  • To my knowledge you need a premium account of some kind to get specific songs on voice mode, you can cast to any mini on free tier though.

I prefer youtube premium over spotify since that takes away the ads on youtube as well.

  • I had the same problem so I signed up to youtube premium on a one-month free trial. I'm hoping by then the novelty would have worn off with the kids or they've broken the thing. Not sure how much more Old Town Road renditions I can handle…
