What this Blu-Ray set top box? Same like Netflix?

    • +2

      Not following…

      • +3

I think it was a backhanded joke about discs being dead.

        • +1

          Pretty rubbish one if so…

  • Can ps4 pro play 4K blue ray as well?

    • +3

This is what I was thinking. If you need a bluray that does a bunch more, Xbox One S (has all the inbuilt apps) and only cost $180-$220

There are many reasons to buy this unit, but for those asking that question then the straight answer might be a simple no.

If you want the best overall image quality under 500 AUD then this is most definitely your unit. The HDR optimizer is actually great, it supports Dolby Vision which last I checked wasn't yet added to the Xbox for UHDBD discs. SDR > HDR actually blew me away when compared to watching older content on Netflix via my PS4 Pro, Chromecast Ultra or even the native LG app on my OLED. I always reach for the Panasonic remote to watch Netflix, though this may change when the 2019 shield comes in. All in all, it's a great unit for the cost if you're the sort of person who is looking for it, you probably won't be disappointed. If not, then an Xbox is your best bet.

Check out the review from Vincent on HDTVTest channel from youtube if you want to know more, he covers is all and is worth a sub if you enjoy his content.

Edit, specifically his video titled "Why Panasonic UB9000's HDR Optimiser is Such A Killer Feature" This player contains the same feature.

No, Xbox One S and X are the only consoles that can play 4K Blu Ray movies.

  • +1

Is there a reason youd get this over an Xbox one s?

    • +16

      Many.

      HDR tone mapping and optimiser.

Dolby Vision (Xbox can only do DV via streaming, not disc).

Xbox is about 5-10 seconds slower to load discs, whether that's the drive or the background OS and such, it's definitely slower.

Xbox is also a bit louder than a standard player.

      • +3

Fair enough - good to know!

  • +2

Great price, love my unit. Only really get this if you have a genuine HDR display, otherwise stick with a lower model.

  • +6

$465.8 + Shipping at videopro eBay use code PLATEAU ok for those nearby videopro & can pick up, otherwise shipping $14.85

  • How does this compare to the cheaper Sony UBP-X700?
Sony UBP-X700 supports DV on UHDBD discs.

    • much better

the sony udp x800m2 is comparable but sony Australia declined offering them to us preferring to gouge via the old x800 and the 700, which are both inferior.

considering its age this should be cheaper but there's little competition so..

    • The Sony you have to manually turn on DV if the disc supports it which is a turn off for many people. I don't know much else about the player besides that.

      • Fair enough, mine was $222 which is about 46% of this.

  • I have the 420 and it is a great player. This has a couple of additions like HDR+.

    • To my knowledge the 420 is the same as the 820 but with a different/slower UI.

      • No Dolby Vision with the 420 as well.

        • That's what I meant, not HDR+, it has Dolby Vision.

      • The UB420 doesn't support Dolby Vision.
The UB420 is also a fair bit louder in operation compared with the UB820 due to being almost half the weight.
Also it lacks the front panel display (some might actually prefer this, personally I like having it)

Why not just buy an Xbox one s for this price?

    • +5

      Why not read comments above…

  • I've been wanting a 4k player for some David Attenborough docos but my old 4k tvs are not HDR compatible so am I better off getting an Xbox One X? Not a massive gamer but we have all the other consoles so if I'm going to add to the clutter I might as well just get an xbox since its dual purpose?

    • Not worth getting this one then.

      • Agreed, if you don't have an HDR TV this unit is going to be a waste of money, there are cheaper units and as you said the Xbox is dual purpose.

    • As above, this player is overkill.

However I also had a not quite hdr 4k displays (2015 Sony Android TV's with hdr update), UHD bluray really comes into its own with hdr, 4k isn't the big difference. Many reviews suggest this too.

      • Ive got a Sony 65X8500C which I think has HDR (dont think that invludes HDR10+ or Dolby Vision) but the option is buried under HDMI Enhancements and I doesnt give any further details. I never planned to get an xbox but better than a dedicated player that barely gets used.

        • I had two 758500cs, the HDR they added in an update was token at best. I've since changed to x95s and they are significantly better with HDR.

The TV was never built for it. The colours appeared awfully off whenever I tried it.

I never really appreciated the 4k discs till I switched TV's.

Definitely go the Xbox, but don't go outta, your way to upgrade your library in the meantime.

@scuderiarmani: Not surprised. After all it's a very old tv technology wise but I'm not so keen that I'll be getting a new tv any time soon. Thanks for the advice

  • Yep thanks. Thought about a dedicated player but I cant imagine buying many discs besides docos and the odd movie. I've read xbox isnt the best but for my purpose it seems to be the better option. I guess i could buy a basic player for less than the price of an xbox but i might as well have the option to jump on those cheap xbox game deals!

  • Does it have Dolby atmos support for netflix?

    • Hey dude, found some info here

      https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/hometheater/co…

      Looks like it does

      • thanks mate, that looks like the support for native atmos via bitstream for BD discs. no mention of support for apps like netflix. i think xbox one's dont support atmos for bd i am not wrong

        • Just watched some Netflix through mine and it bit-streamed Atmos OK.
