        • Just to confirm, I took my 40 channel Uniden's bought from the last deal back to a DSE store today, and they refunded the $30 back to my CC ; )

    • -1

      yeah you are !!!

  • +1

bring on the bluetooth version! or atleast one with a headset… would be great on a bike!

  • Bought the 40 channel one, very good quality.

…i think wisc meant for passengers, not the driver… =P

        • +2

think its only mobiles that your not allowed to hold… cbs are fine.

        • +4

Just confirming that you don't need a hands free for these. It is permitted to use a 2-way radio while driving. The law only pertains to mobile phones. As a ham radio operator I've heard this question come up a number of times and the answer is 2-way radios are fine.

    • DO you have babies?

      • +6

dont you have to press down button to talk into it?!! smart baby! lol

        • +3

          "babies"

plural. They'd have to work together.

    • Have a listen to the "repeaters" (duplex channels) and get yourself a totally new education of the English language.

Well you will soon know if your kids have been using them, by the "choice" words they may come out with.

  • Anyone know if these have jacks for input and PTT control?

    Ignore, found manual.

    • and the answer is? thats what i was talking about above…

  • +1

I know it's illegal to bring and use this in Japan, does anyone know if this applies to any of the European nations or where I can find out?

    • +1

You'd have to check with the countries communications authority.
Anyone feel free to tell me if i'm wrong. I think Australia (and maybe NZ) only have UHF CB in the 477mhz range. So I think only legal to use in AU and possibly NZ.

Wouldn't be illegal to bring into Japan I'd say, but the operation there of, I'd say no.

  • Half Price. Not Bad.

  • bought the 40 channel and its was great, my boy loves it. bought another 2 for gifts! great find!

  • Oh woot, I gave the last one a miss as I already owned a 40 channel one, but a pair of 77 channel units is a bargain! Good for road trips with other cars in convoy.

  • +2

Sold. This would be handy to stay in touch with the family at theme parks.

  • +3

DAMN you all, OZBargains strikes again, so far i havent really bought too much on an impulse buy, but caved on this…
was tempted by the first one, but this one sent me over the edge!

  • +1

I've successful resisted the temptation of the last deal but thrown a white flag on this one. Thought to myself, I don't really need it now but might need it in the future.

Someone in here gotta write a "How to resist a Bargain" for repeated offenders of impulse buying.

    • +2

      exactly my thought haha

  • +2

gave the 1st a miss as i dont need it but bought it due to all the hype lol

    • lol all four of us got hit in the same way!
resisted the first one, then all the good reviews, couldn't withstand… think you're onto somthing tricky dick with this sales tactic!
sell something good, thats very difficult to resist… then sell something better at the same price.

      • +1

        Make that 5… lol

I was in the same boat, skipped the first deal - Although I wanted the first deal, I reluctantly resisted. When this came up, I didn't think twice :)

  • Just be aware that these are 0.5W power output. Manufacturer claims 3KM, but this is usually line of sight, in good weather, with no obstructions and even then you'll get a lot less than that.

So apart from car to car room to room they aren't very powerful for anything else.

I have the 2.5W version of the Unidens and they struggle with only a few Kms let alone their claimed 13Km range. They are well built though.

    • 0.5w on uhf cb will easily get a couple of km line of sight, no obstructions.
i have talked on 1200mhz 0.5w over 50km from hill top to hiltop using handheld radio.

A while ago, i also tried the other unidens (0.5w) from DSE, from inside Fountaingate shopping centre and could easily trigger the local channel 3 repeater (when it was functional) a couple of Km's away.
      So for $30 delivered…. BARGAIN!!!

      • what he forgot to mention that he was on the hill underneither the repeater…

  • +2

These sound like they'd be great for a music festival, although you'd need some form of vibrate or flashing light so people notice that there's someone trying to contact them surely?

Damn - even with lights, vibrate AND sound my girlfriend rarely hears her phone.

  • +2

Hmmm… do people really chat that much in convoys? I mean, aren't most people on a mobile cap with more credit than they need anyway?

    • +4

This is purely impulse buying. You know how weak ozbargainers heart - every time they see something cheap.
I'm one of them - HELP ME! Puhleeaazeee

    • actually, talking on a turn-by-turn basis is rather more fun than simultaneously. also, i dare say that the audio quality is also better than mobile, from my experience

      • True - I went on a 'car cruise' (20+ cars) and having one of these was unreal.

The convoy missions I find mobiles do just fine 'Hey we're pulling into the Hungry Jacks' etc is all we really say, again, someone usually has an unlimited plan or heaps of cap they don't use.

Bush doofs are the other good use (as there usually is no service), however nobody pays attention to it - might be different if it's on a necklace (these things are small).

  • +11

    Funny story…
I got this bargain last time, they seem quite good quality.
But I specifically got them to see if they could be used like a portable baby monitor:
I wrapped an elastic band around the push to talk button on the 'transmitter' handset, placed it in the baby pram and parked the baby pram in another room.
I could hear the carrier signal easily on the 'receiver' handset but it dropped out after a minute or two - turns out that the transmitter handset was beeping away loudly… I suppose as a warning that the push to talk button had been on for a long time, and it woke up the baby!
Result: Not so good as a portable baby monitor! haha

    • +4

Also, people driving past could talk to your baby - have you listened to the way people talk to each other on these things. Great way to teach the baby his first words.

      • +2

Sometimes it seems like I'm talking to babies on them :/

  • Thanks FOX, jumped all over this given the damn think sold out quick last time, even more bang for your buck! Thanks also to byrnie for the entertaining story :)

Does anyone know if there was any difference in dimensions between this one and the 40 channel one on sale earlier? TIA.

  • Got it thanks, kids will have fun with it.

    • +1

Received it today - they are so tiny.

  • What sort of Battery does it use?

    • not sure about this one but most of the cheap ones take AAA batteries its only the really good ones that are rechargeable units

    • 3 AAA alkaline batteries specified.
rechargeable cells MAY work, but with reduced transmit power output.

    • These batteries are rechargable AAA, but have a long shelf life.
Although as dear as the radios, the saving in batteries long term will be worth it.

      http://junglejumble.com.au/sanyo-eneloop-8x-aaa-nimh-recharg…

no charger, but most folks have one nowdays.

DSE have AAA eneloops too, but more expensive +shipping
      http://dicksmith.com.au/product/S4412/eneloop-4-x-aaa-ready-…

      • I never had a prob with rechargeable in theses, never tested beyond a kay or so but it worked fine.

I guess $30 is not bad really oz-dxer but we can do better

Oz bargainers i put the challenge to you to find good rechargeable batteries at a discount price, i think the max that you can get AAA in is 1700MAH but please prove me wrong.

  • +4

LOL @ the impulse buy stories!

I did some sums the other day…

(Money saved due to Ozbargain on purchases I would have made) - (money spent due to Ozbargain on purchases that I shouldn't have made) = $3

  • great deal

    THANKS FOX

glad i missed out on the other ones now, I think its getting oz bargined though i tried twice to pay with credit card and got an error page but it went through with pay pal.

  • Sweet! This will be useful when I'm out on my next work field trip. We'll be going through a large parcel of raw land in two 4WDs most likely so this will be good to have for communication. Another tax deduction thanks to OzBargain! - lol

  • Been wanting something like this for a while, was thinking of the wristwatch style ones, but at this price I had to give them a go! Thanks :)

  • Thanks for posting this - I couldn't resist… always wanted a set of these. Will use my kid as the excuse for purchase LOL

  • Breaker breaker…
So where's a site that tells you what each channel is and how to use 'repeaters'?
    Jaxx out…

    • forget about trying to use these with repeaters unless you are very close, they wont cut it.

i found this link on the first page of a google search http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB

  • Great bargain!!! DSE website does it again.

  • +5

You get an extra 33 channels, but if all your friends bought the 40 channel one, you're still stuck on 0-40 anyways.

I'll be on Ch 36 every hour on the hour to say hi to local OzBargainers.

    • roger that

    • let us make Ch 36 the ozb community channel

      • +1

Yeah well this place is such a sausage sizzle that we ain't going with Ch 69

        • +1

          Then I suggest Ch 11

        • LOL, well done boys!

  • Haven't people heard of SMS? Didn't Optus even have Push to talk but it failed so hard they got rid of it. Guess Optus should've launched half price on Oz Bargain!

  • Pricematched at officeworks :D $28.48!

It requires AAA batteries, though, so make sure you get some!

    • Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Officeworks one only 40
      Channel?

      • Nah they have these 77 channel ones :D

    • I made a dodgy USB->AAA adapter pack >.> It's dodgy as hell, but I can now use my new units without having to go near any late-night shops!

    • +1

can you please post your receipt?

  • +1

    out of stock

    • yep, too bad I didn't buy it 5 mins ago :(

  • How safe is this for kids use as far as them hearing foul language goes?

    • +2

They will hear plenty, if that's what you want.

      • i agree, if you want a good profanity teacher, these would be brilliant - you don't even have to hang out with sailors/builders, just sit in the comfort of your own home

      • +2

yeah, ch7 around my area is always busy with people slagging each other off, and complaining about #$@#$$% tree loppers. I don't know why but they really hate tree loppers.

        • +1

If you've ever had an industrial wood chipper running outside your house all Saturday you'll understand.

  • sold out

  • Hahahah, this reminds me of how if you use an American radio here, you can tune into one of the taxi channels, I remember hearing dispatch tell a driver where a customer was at lol.

  • +1

Even though I know I didn't need one, I am sad this is now sold out and I didn't get one.

Hopefully they'll bring out 160 channel ones tomorrow!!

  • why does it say IN STOCK for the rrp item here?

    http://dicksmith.com.au//product/D1985/uniden-uh037sx-2nb-uh…

Store stock of above item seem to show it is stocked in all stores around my area as well.
Did they just allocate afew to the sale? Seems alittle shady of them.

    • +8

Generally it's because we've managed to convince the manufacturer to sell us a certain number at a price well below our usual wholesale price so we can give you guys the bargains you're looking for. We're not attempting to be 'shady', sometimes there are only so many we can secure the better price on.

Don't worry… when they sell out, we always go back and ask for more :P i.e. the last lot sold out so we brought the deal back on it this week.

      • Thank you for the prompt response. A satisfactory explanation.

      • +2

        So…….. bring out 160 channel :D

  • manage to order a set monday afternoon, arrived today at Lunch time, can't beat that. first time I have bought anything from DSE online, and will happily do so again.

  • Received mine today. Surprised at how small they are - I like it!

    • Picked mine up this morning. Yeah, was surprised at the size too. Now, to get some AAA batteries!

      • Coles is selling Energizer 8pk for $9.00 this week

        • $9 gets you 24 Varta alkalines at bunnings

  • +4

Just did some measurements on the unit, on lowest volume

    Standby - 14mA
    Scan - 34mA
    Receive - 44mA
    Transmit - 300mA

What this means is, when used with good alkaline batteries, corrected for drain and assuming cutout at 1V/cell:

    Standby - 70Hrs
    Scan - 30Hrs
    Receive - 20-25Hrs
    Transmit - 2Hrs
