  • Charcoal is a good filter.

  • look at reverse osmosis.

A bit overkill. Wasteful of water and takes literally everything out, even good minerals.

      • becomes acidic it seems

        • you can add a remineralization stage which makes it ph neutral.

@garetz: So you tak the minerals out, waste a tonne of water, then put them back in?

            • @brendanm: You also take out most heavy metals amongst other things.

              • @garetz: Heavy metals can be removed or at least reduces from normal filters. Can't remember the last time I saw someone die of mercury or lead poisoning from tap water anyway.

    • As others have said this might be a bit much to reduce bad taste

      • bad taste of water is just a symptom, what is actually causing the bad taste is what should concern you.

  • I got a self install single stage setup from the water shop because they had a specific tap I wanted that meant I didn't need to install a second tap on the bench. Plus another filter for the coffee machine so I don't need to descale. Been working well for 12 months.

    • I don't mind installing another tap, means i don't have to replace the filter as much

Uses the existing tap, so you dont need any additional taps on the bench top.
I can recommend using this. Personally I dont notice too much of a difference since I am born and raised from SA water, so we get the the delicous heavy minerals in our water compared to the eastern states. Have had visitors from Victoria say its up to scratch in comparison to filtered and non-filtered.

    • Seems promising, How would something like this differ from the normal 2 or 3 stage water filters? is the quality of the filter Better or there is just less filtration?

      • Its fine i guess, not too sure really as i am taste buds dont seeem to be too picky with water. I have a fridge filter dispenser and tend to use the hiflow water to drink(but more for filling bottles). I have a puratap at work find my hiflow tastes better.

  • Op, would this not be suitable for your needs?

I had the same problem - bad tasting water. In comparing different units, I’d consider the micron size of the filter (smaller is better), what type of tap you want, whether they include the valves or it’s extra. The leak stop device isn’t necessary - I was just worried about a flood under my sink if anything goes wrong. Also make sure you have space under your sink for the unit - they hang down a fair way and you also need access to change the filter cartridges.

I got a twin under sink unit from waterfilterfactory on eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Water-Filter-Undersink-Carbon-Ch…

I got the “works” for $135:
    - 0.5 micron sediment filter
    - 0.5 micron carbon filter
    - faucet upgrade to a ceramic disk tap
    - 350kpa pressure release value (PRV)
    - non return valve (NRV)
    - leak stop device

I got a qualified plumber to install it off HiPages for $200.

Been running for 12 months with no problems. And the water taste is all gone!

    • With water filter units in general, can you just buy any brand cartridge filters to replace them or do they have to be the same brand?

Do they have a universal fit or do they vary?

    Look on eBay… not joking…
These are a simple job….. do it yourself….
Don't pay a plumber …. it is a simple job: : get a spanner, and screwdriver. 2: turn off water at mains. 3: SIMPLY undo the connectors (instructions included) and attach new filter. 4: Turn on mains. 5: Enjoy fresh clean water.

  • An alternative is use a filter jug and check if the filtered water is good enough before any installs.

Filters can be expensive to maintain

  • Have been using a Twin filter for last 15 years in Melbourne.
My mother was using 3 pieces of material cut from a singlet
and washing them every 2 weeks. The amount of rust & dirt collected
    makes you sick.
    I use a
a)particle filter of 1 micron to remove sediments and
b)coconut carbon filter 0.5 micron to remove smells, chlorine and some other chemicals
c)There is another filter with Silver,to remove even more chemicals , much more expensive.
I replace them every October as we drink a lot more water in summer.
Even the dog likes the filtered water.
When you buy a unit make sure to get extra rubber seals you will need them
    after 5 years.
My unit is now old (works perfectly) I was looking for rubber seals but
Water filter sellers won't give you any info on replacement seals they want you to buy their new units.
good thing I got mine from china for 0.50c ea vs $5-10ea.
PS. In a new install I used a 3 way tap (Tricky to install as the short hoses supplied are not Au thread and can not be tightened)I got from REECE
long stem hoses a now enjoying clean water again.

  • Pura Tap. After the installation ( $150 i think) it's $73 per year for them to come and change the filters. Seems expensive but if you want pure clean water without the chlorine smell then it's well worth it. We're in S.A. I'm not or have ever been involved with Pura Tap
