Looking to upgrade my Mobo, CPU and RAM for my current PC

I've got a 1080 GPU and an 850w gold+ corsair PSU. Looking at upgrading my CPU/RAM/Mobo as these are the most dated in my system. Basically 80% gaming, 20% mapping/cad softwares usage. My budget isn't super strict, but I don't see the need in going much higher based off what I'm getting for the price.

What are people's thoughts on these parts I've picked out? The 3600X just seems like the absolute best in tier for performance vs value. I wasn't 100% sure on the RAM but I've read the Ryzen chips do better with faster RAM and so looking at 3200 and the corsair stuff was the cheapest in that tier for price/speed. And wasn't 100% sure on the mobo but it seems that most dedicated PC sites push towards the MSI B450 carbon pro above the tomahawk or anything else in the tier.

Would appreciate any input.

RAM is fine, and seems like a great price on the 3600x, as the 3600 usually sells around $300.

Do you need a MB with wifi? If so it is a decent price, but usually works out better and cheaper getting say an MSI B450M Mortar Max and a separate wifi solution.

    • Don't need wifi capabilities or PCI4 so that's why I didn't pursue anything more expensive.

Also my other major concern is having to flash the BIOS on the mobo which supposedly has issues with the Ryzen 3xxx series. I've got a Intel 3770 so can't flash it with that.

      • If you get an MSI B450 'MAX' version, they are already flashed for Ryzen 3 series.

  • If money isn't an issue I would consider jumping to 32GB ram. Depends how often you upgrade your parts but DDR4 is hear for a while and I don't think you'd regret dropping in the extra ~$90 now. I see games and software stepping past the 16GB within the life of your upgrade, but still feel 16GB would work well enough.

    • would getting another 2 sticks of 8gb ram, later on, be OK if the need arises? (is there an advantage of getting it now?)

RAM is one of those things where you should only get more if you're exhausting most/all of the current RAM. Having 32GB of RAM and only ever launching Word will perform more or less exactly the same as with 16GB or 8GB RAM.

For the time being, 16GB is largely considered enough for most users/gamers.

          This 100%.

I don't agree that this is true anymore, or at least not as true as it used to be. Applications are becoming increasingly RAM hungry. In my experience this is also coupled with a rise in multi-screen setups.

To be fair I was making some assumptions of NeuroRaptor's usage. The fact he was upgrading ram mean I thought he was moving from 8GB DDR3 to 16GB DDR4. Gaming and mapping/cad softwares are some of the uses that can benefit from more ram.

      • From my understanding getting another 2x8gb later should be fine. Ideally you'll get the same ram to minimise the chance of comparability errors. Historically there has been a little bit of a risk the ram wont play nicely together but this often meant a little bit of drop in performance vs the ideal situation.

Theoretically there are speed differences depending on how your motherboards bandwidth is setup using 2 DIMM slots vs 4 can make a difference. I think it should be fine either way, just keep an eye on utilisation (see rloos's comment)

  • Get the ryzen 5 3600 as you can get it fairly easy for $279 and if you wait a bit you might even be able to get it as low as $250

  • I would get the 3600 and look at some of the cheaper X570s as i've seen some around the 250 mark. Plus you may not need pci-e 4.0 now but if you decide to get a new videocard down the track you may benefit from it even if its very minor.
