Digital Luggage Scale - Recommendations?

Hi all,

Have had a typical weighing scale style manual handheld luggage scale device. It works well , abit more chunky than a digital, however am looking to purchase a digital luggage scale weighing machine. After going to Japan a few years back i found it quite handy that one could weigh a heavy bag and not waste time trying to interpret the manual scale as the digital machine just pops the digital weight up instantly.

My prior scale had a metal handle and used a hook end to weigh bags which i found ok. Would there be any good quality, affordable digital scale/brand anyone could recommend? Happy to purchase online, through the typical china sellers or locals - amazon, ebay etc.

Main thing is quality i.e. can weigh at least to 32kg of weight if not more (won't go past 32kg on a bag but always good to know if your 34 kg vs 32), and good functionality - i found the hook system good previously but a few of the google searches bring up strap based weighing machines (are these a hindrance in practicality? They would save space than a physical metal hook though)

Thanks in advance!

  • Have 2 of these in the family and still works great after 5 years or so with just the batteries needing to be replaced couple of times - https://www.amazon.com.au/Salter-9500-Luggage-Scale/dp/B006Z…

    • comes up as $100+ new? So not too sure if its in the price range, was thinking a cheaper sub $30-40? or is that aiming too low?

Do you not find a strap/buckle fragile for lifting large (i.e. 23-30kg) bags? I've always used a metal hook manual one so it's always felt relatively strong.

      • Few times I've tried to weigh bags that were already overweight and haven't had any issue with these ones. Personally I would prefer the strap over the hook as less pressure is applied on the handle (specially if the handle is thin or made out of a not-so strong leather/fabric material) due to the larger surface area of a strap compared to a metal hook so the possibility of the handle breaking off or getting damaged would be much less.

But if you are after a scale with a hook here is a Samsonite in your price range: https://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/detail/samsonite-foldable-d…

It is a Samsonite so I suppose you can't go wrong with this one.

        • Thanks, i'll consider it. So far i buy pretty ok luggages so i would hope the handle wouldn't break due to the hook… but if others have used straps with no issues i'll consider straps, as ultimately it'll be easier to balance a strap over a handle then a heavy bag on a hook end. I just thought it'd be more susceptible to breakage.

One thing I notice with alot of the straps ones is the unit itself is a small rectangle and I can't fathom how it holds up with weight? I have noticed the larger but less common digital ones have like a finger grip thing , but unlike my analgoue they don't really come with a dedicated hand holding area for holding the unit? I suppose the plastic/main unit itself can hold up against 20-30kg of weight being applied to it via resting on your hand/fingers?

          edit:

hostweigh #12 per this link is an example of one with a finger holding dedicated area

  • I bought a digital luggage scale for $10 from my local cheap shop. It's been accurate and portable and never let me down. I would not travel without it, the cost for excess luggage is just so unbelievable you don't want to get caught.

    • agreed! plus i just want to be in the weighted limits when packing. the analogue works fine but its less to the decimal and a roundabout.. sometime i come in under despite coming close to the weight limit (probably depending on angle of viewing). WHereas a digital should technically show you the exact number.

  • I use this one https://www.kmart.com.au/product/digital-luggage-scale/10843… works well, don't find the strap a hindrance

    • thannks - will consider straps then. do you find not having a dedicated holding area for fingers like the #12 hostweigh in below link an issue? Do the units hold up with the weight of holding the unit itself?

      • No issues, I have pretty small hands but even family members with larger hands find it fine to use, there's enough room for your hand to grip it comfortably whole lifting the luggage bag. It's also nice and rounded so it probably is more comfortable IMO than the one you linked to

  • Buy a none digital scales for travel (mechanical), you hardly use them, and when you need to use them, batteries can be flat. And they are pretty accurate.

    • I already have one so i am just looking for a digital.

I got this exact silver Salter one from Bing Lee a few years ago ~$15 works well. Not sure if you can still find them?

  • Bought two from Aldi when they have their travel sale from time to time, around $8 each, something like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/340985.

I've found variation of +/- 0.5kg when compared to the airport check-in scales but close enough for my requirements.

  • You want the one from Kogan. It is rechargeable via USB and doubles as a torch and basic power bank. Don't forget cashback and frequent flyer options. It has free shipping at the moment.

  • +1

Are you asking for Gucci, of Rolls Royce?
If not you simply go on eBay and buy a $5 item.
    They ALL work the same.
$5 eBay… strap to luggage handle, lift, get readout. SIMPLE
    What a SILLY question

    • When I saw the post this is exactly what I thought as well. A travel scale is something you use couple a times a year at most and probably for 2 minutes at a time before it is packed away in a drawer never to be seen until you decide to travel again. You are not weighing gold (or not even a nondescript white powder) so 500g here or there does not really matter. Therefore I'm not sure why this is a decision needing this much thought, research and effort.

Just imagine the OP wanting to make a life decision that really matters such as buying a house or even a car……

  • Bought one from The Reject Shop couple of days ago. Works well.
