"Popularity threshold" for deals to be promoted to front page

Is there a way to tell what the threshold of votes is, so that a deal gets promoted to the front page? I generally visit the front page a few times a day, and sometimes I see a new deal with potential in the right-hand column, and a few votes, but it never makes it to the front page. This is especially true if many new deals are submitted close to each other, the older entries seem to get bumped without the opportunity of being exposed long enough to be voted upon. Too quickly in my view, considering the majority of people would be visiting the front page, not new deals/popular etc.

I looked in the New User FAQ and it contained this:

What is the difference between the front page and the new deals page
The new deals page has all the latest deals that have been submitted by users. They are displayed in order from most recently published. However, when a deal becomes popular (reaches a threshold based of votes), it is moved to the Front page. The number of postive votes to push a deal to the front page changes based on the sites popularity and other factors. However, you can override the settings by clicking - your username - edit - preferences - then changing “minimum votes” to customised and entering a number.

That seems a bit vague to me, also the ability to changing my preferences as described seems to be missing (or is it just me going blind?)

Comments

  • When a deal gets 15 net + votes it gets promoted to the front page
However you can change this in the preferences(but i think scotty has removed this since as i cannot find it anymore)

  • You can change the preference in New Deals - Preferences, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals

15 is default. You can move it from -20 to +30.

    • Thanks for the head up Neal! Now I'm with 50% more :)

  • Thanks. Still a bit hard to find for this old bloke, had to go there 3 times to find it. I don't get how -20 votes would work though :)

Considering new deals seem to be getting published more frequently these days, does the default threshold of 15 need to be re-evaluated? I'd prefer a time limit applied (say 3 or 4 hours) as well, before they disappear off the main page (perhaps a longer New Deals column?). That would ensure enough exposure to get the requisite votes to stay. As I say, I've seen some good offers that had potential, only to be bumped in less than an hour due to being displaced by newer deals. Although they are there on the new deals page, new comments and votes tend to dry up immediately. I tried just linking to the new deals page for a while but there were a few too many "ordinary" submissions for my liking so I switched back to the main page. I'm sure the majority of users only view the main page. Just my suggestion for consideration.

-20 would probably make EVERY posted deal to the front page(for those who make it -20)

15 is fine, as it 'filters' the good post from the 'not-so-good' post

      • I would have thought any value between 0 and -20 would make it appear. However upon further reflection, I think I get it. -20 would mean I still want to see it despite 20 people negging it. 21 negs and it must be a real stinker…

I have changed my prefs to 8, I'll see if that seems more balanced to me. I don't have a problem with having a threshold of 15, it just seems sometimes they don't hang around long enough to get a chance for people to view it or vote.
