ALDI 100L Water Tank

So ALDI had the 100l water tank for sale today. Seems the same as the Bunnings one but comes with the extra attachments at a better price. I picked one as I have a small garden, no outdoor tap, and it will be useful for automatically watering my plants when I'm away.
Does anyone have any experience with the ALDI one? Does it do the job you purchased it for?

  • Where are you getting the water to fill it?

    • Lol yeah obviously not catching any rain any time soon. As I said I'll be using it as an automatic waterer for when I'm away from the house. So I'll add the water when needed…until the rain returns

      • So you’ll use tap water to add to the tank, and then use the tank water to water the garden? That sounds like a lot of work. Do don’t you use tapwater and a digital timer?

        • As I said I don't have an outdoor tap. So I water using a watering can. So when I'm away there is currently no outdoor water source to attach a timer to. I've tried the old coke bottle in the ground trick but it doesn't really last the time required

I made an automatic watering system for my mum this Christmas, as it just so happens. She enjoys gardening more for the fresh air than the economics of it, so I didn't want to take too much control from her by making the whole thing automatic. At its heart, all she needed was a large water source that could keep a single garden bed alive for the week in between her regular watering.

    I based it around:
    this timer
    this barrel
    an outlet for the barrel
and a display that shows the water level at a glance

Throw in some weeping hose, a stand to raise the tank, and you have the basics of a watering system.

    • That's awesome, I did consider the large blue barrels as they come up on gumtree for very little. Thanks for sharing the links, that timer is exactly what I need.

      • No probs man. Thanks for giving me the platform to deliver my piece from. Watering systems are something I've thought about a lot, but this is the first thing I've actually put into practice, so its good to be able to share something that works.

A lot of people would say that for the $ and the effort, why not just jump straight to a mains fed system, which is a sentiment I'm tempted to agree with, but this type of setup has a lot of advantages to it. Its cheap (<$100 for everything), easy to setup, easy to use, and no risk of coming back from holiday to find that your backyard has flooded because some part malfunctioned and let the water flow constantly for days and days.

Agreed. It's also just a fun little project for me. If it all works as expected I might take it a step further and play around with an Arduino and moisture sensors. Well over engineered haha but just something to work on.

  • Here is a pic, just so as we are all on the same page…

    • Gotta spend money to make money.

      • not sure how OP will recoup any money.

  • Which stores are selling this

    • I assumed it's nation wide?

      • No Aldi in Tasmania, so it can’t be.

      • I couldn't see one at my local
